568989 2007-07-14 04:38:00 Have seen other people with similar prob, but not a solution that works
with new email program.
The New Windows Mail program comes with Vista wont open up Word attachments.
Get error mg "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action.
Create an association in the Set Associations control panel."

Tried control panel/programs/default programs/Set Association
Then changed Name " DOC files to open with Word"

But hasn’t made any difference.
Also tried restarting incase that would work.

If I save the attach, then open up via Word 2007 its okay, (even if Word 2000). But dont want to save every word attach.

This is a totally new comp, no old programs (eg, XP. Old office)

Any ideas anyone

568990 2007-07-14 04:54:00 But there is some version of office installed tho right??

Most probably a security feature or something.

Save it then open it, instead of trying to open it, in an attachment.

568991 2007-07-14 05:03:00 Yes, have just installed Office 2007.

Can open via Word if I save attachment first.
Just that I didnt have to in 95.
and there is an option for default opening, it just doesnt
seem to work.

Get quite a few Word Docs attach that I only need to
read & not save. If I now have to save them all first, then I have to remember to go and delete them.

Couldnt see any security probs, did try taking off allowing attach on
Explorer, didnt make any diff either.

many thanks

568992 2007-07-14 06:12:00 There is a registry edit that fixes this problem for pps files and I suspect a similar reg edit would fix doc but I don't have vista to check it with and if you are not comfortable with regediting then it would be foolish to dabble.
If you are willing to have a go please don't hold me responsible for the after effects.
First do a restore point.
Run regedit and navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\word.document.......
you will probably find several keys starting Word.document followed by various suffixes. On each of these in turn click the little + to expand the subkeys and look for the sub key 'shell'. Click the + beside 'shell' and look for the subkey 'show'.
Edit the 'show' to 'open' (without the quotes) by right click on the "show' and select rename, change 'show' to 'open'.
Close regedit and test, I suggest you do one change at a time and make notes as you go unless you are completely comfortable about reg editing.
I cannot stress enough the danger of editing registry without knowing what you are doing. If you have any doubts get professional help.
As I said before, this worked for .pps files not opening in windows mail on a friends PC but I have been unable to test it for .doc files as I don't have Vista available.

568993 2007-07-14 06:24:00 Ta jinja_thom,

your solution looks good, but u right to suggest
only if I have some exper with registry edit, which I dont.
So unfortunately I wont risk it.
Have been reading various forums, and seems lots of people are having same prob with Windows Mail.
Some say turn off Email security (McAFee, Nortons) and it will work.
I tried this and no difference.
Others say dont use Windows Mail use Mozilla.

Guess I'll just have to save attach if I want to read them,
until MS puts some sort of fix, or enlightens us.:groan:

It's probably not what you want to hear but personally I think not being able to open Word docs directly from an attachment is quite a good thing as it reduces the risk of getting a virus infection. I always advise to save attachments to the hard drive first, scan with an AV and then open if clean.
