oh dear! How long should power supplies last?
I figure just on 3 years isnt very long!

I have replaced power supplies that range in age from 6 months to 10 years. Reasons can be brand, electrical issues, power cuts and power rating of the power supply.

I replaced a 3yr old 120W HP power supply not long ago. Yes it was a 120W. I put in at least 400W now days.

It could also be a faulty on off switch, loose connection on the motherboard or faulty motherboard to name a few things.

Mine is a 350W.
I have always used a UPS so power cuts, brown outs etc shouldnt be a factor.
What sort of price would I pay for a replacement ?(increase in wattage from 350)

569347 2007-07-15 23:17:00 I brought a Thermaltake 430W for $60, only because it didnt come in packaging etc . Just the PSU.

Its ok, well it hasnt killed anything YET.

A higher PSU maybe / would be better, for your system tho.

350W maybe a tad low for a P4 3.2 system.

Thanks for the info.
I am a bit anoyed to think I paid for a built to spec pc from a local store to now find that it is not a powerful enough PSU was installed:(

How complicated is it to replace a PSU? I can install RAM, PCI cards etc but I am not keen on taking everthing out......:waughh:

You shouldn't (well hopefully) have to remove anything to replace the PSU .

Altho this may depend on where the PSU is, in your PC case .

Look on the back of the case, you'll see 4 screws holding the PSU in .

All u do, is turn the system off (of course), unplug it from power, take the screws out, and disconnect the power connectors inside the case (going to the hdd/cd's etc) .

Hopefully the PSU is a standard sized one . Then pull the PSU out of the case .

Putting another PSU in, is just the reverse of the above .

Put the new PSU in make sure the screw holes match up to the holes in the case . Put the 4 screws back in . Then reconnect the power connectors back up to the hdd's/cd's etc . That it .

(Dont forget, if the PSU has an ATX 12v adapter (it looks like a square (2x2 plug) and if the mobo also has one, (it most probably does have one) to reconnect this too, or it wont boot) .

Press the on/off button, on the case . It should boot!

569350 2007-07-15 23:53:00 Cool, thanks for that.
Hopefully it will be as simple as that.

Just a quick question:
I am having a look at different PSU and there is such huge price differences!
($55 to over $400) what on Earth should I be looking for in a PSU?

Thanks

It doesnt really matter, just as long as the PSU has the connectors for whatever u have in the case. (most PSU's have the basic molex connectors, the ones you connect to hdd's, cd's and dvd's).

And maybe floppy connectors. Altho its better to get a PSU round / over 400W, if you have something like a 3.2 + system.

Well this may also depend on whats in the case as well.

ie: If your system has things like SLI videocards (that need power) or something, it'll be a good idea to get PSU's that have whatever connector on it for this.

Just dont buy Hyena PSU's I've heard theyre crap.

You dont need PSU's with the fancy gadgets (flashing LED's / displays etc).

Like the only reason, I brought these Thermaltake PSU's, I have here, is they've got a SATA hdd power connector on them (which the older PSU didnt have).

I had to use a SATA to molex adapter on the old PSU, so the SATA hdd had power.

Only prob was, the wires in the adapter kept coming out, so the hdd wouldnt boot!

I had to open the case all the time to push the wires back in.

And as above these are 430 W PSU's running on P4 2.4 systems.

569352 2007-07-16 00:28:00 The thing is that the power supply is only one thing that could be the problem. You could put in a new one and still have the problem. My approach would be to check all connections and have a close inspection of the on off switch. Next would be power supply and I have seen people with this problem and keep using the PC until it stops completely as it has fried the motherboard. Unfortunately a process of elimination. berryb (99)
569353 2007-07-16 00:38:00 Well, getting a better PSU is more important, than wondering why a PC is turning itself on (which is most probably fixed now).

Getting another PSU was based on the system / CPU being used. Not because it might fix the PC from turning itself on.

Meg wont know if its been fixed, (once those 2 options have been disabled in the BIOS), until its off.
