568995 2007-07-14 04:05:00 The modem I use for internet is this one (www.amazon.com) Its working fine but I have a problem because it no longer has an antenna. I used to be able to receive signal from it upstairs in my house (the modem is downstairs), but now that the antenna is gone, I don't receive signal at all. The reason I used to be able to pick up signal is because my laptop (www.dell.com) can pick up signal with a built in card. Is there any way, I can increase the range in order to pick up the signal from the modem downstairs? I know I can still pick up signal from the modem because if I get close enough to it, I can pick up a wireless signal. I just need a way to extend the range so I can pick it up from a further distance. alsoslick (10137)
568996 2007-07-14 04:11:00 You will need to replace the antenna. You might find it easier to replace the whole thing if the antenna was hardwired rather than being plugged into a socket.

If there is a socket, it would pay to take the unit while shopping for an antenna. There are a number of different incompatible plug/sockets used. ;)

If hes linking to amazon chances are hes American so Pricespy will be of little use! Theres no point buying a range extender if you don't have an antenna.

569000 2007-07-15 03:40:00 Before using a range extender, you would need to get some range to extend. It worked with an antenna. It's designed to work with an antenna. As you have discovered, it does not work very well without an antenna.

Replace the antenna, or the whole unit, and you probably won't need a range extender.

569001 2007-07-15 09:43:00 OH yeah! You need an antenna, in fact you shouldn't run it without one. The antenna is the load where the RF is dissipated, if its not there then that energy is dissipated in the Final RF amp which causes it to heat up. At some point it will go poof, no more wifi..... porkster (6331)
