570339 2007-07-19 13:17:00 Title says it all. nVidia, ATI, whatever....fire away. Basically i want the best value for money with my tight budget. I want to play games such as Test Drive Unlimited with a decent resolution and HDR etc. My current card is a Radeon X300se, so I need an upgrade from that - at least 256mb video memory.

At the moment, my current video card (Radeon X300se) is a real bottleneck. Otherwise my computer would seem to have ample power to handle these games - P4 3.2Ghz, 1gb RAM.

All suggestions appreciated. Budget is pretty strict unless there is something significantly better value for a slight increase in price. $150 is probably the maximum - the cheaper the better though.

Cheers

$150 won't get you much at all .

I agree, keep saving.

What is the monitor resolution?

An nvidia 8600GT @ $181 wouldnt be a bad card, however HDR and res over 1280x1024 will bring it to its knees

Unless you have AGP, which costs a bit more

570345 2007-07-20 07:10:00 I've had a look at Pricespy but there are just so many models and different versions of each model . . . gets a little confusing . I do realise that $150 won't get much but I'm not spending too much more because I don't play games very often at all and there is nothing else that I need a powerful video card for . All I want ot be able to do is simply be able to run the latest games smoothly and so that they look half decent .

Here are the recommended video card requirements for Test Drive: ATI Radeon 9800 256MB VRAM or Nvidia 6600 GT with 256 MB of VRAM .

Is there anything better than these two models that I can get for around $150 to $200? By the way I am looking at PCI Express . . . .

570346 2007-07-20 07:49:00 a 9800 would be AGP, so not really useful for you, plus the X series would be better performance anyway, and supports shader model 3

You could get an 8600GT, for $170 or a 7600GT for about $13 less, both are better than the 6600GT

Otherwise a Radeon X1600XT for $185 would be nice too, but since the geforce 8 supports direct X 10, (and I think, better HD video acceleration) it might come in handy

Not too sure of the performance difference between the X1600XT and 8600GT though

570347 2007-07-20 11:38:00 So for about $10 more, the 8600 GT is a better buy than the 7600 GT? I went to a local PC store today and the guy there seemed to know everythign about naything to do with computers. He also recommended the 8600 for this particular game as opposed to the 8500 which I was otherwise looking at.

I am running Windows XP, so the Direct X 10 card will still be compatible right? And am I right in assuming that for the same price, nVidia cards are better than ATI cards?

570348 2007-07-20 12:12:00 If you can get 8600GT for only $10 more, why not? The performance will beat 7600GT and 8500GT, and it's dx10 compatible. Just remember to buy GDDR3 versions if you decide to buy 8600GT. developer (4447)
