570240 2007-07-19 04:28:00 Does anyone know if it is a good idea to let the computer connect to the internet to update the Windows Installation Files when one goes through the reinstall process for Windows on a machine? :badpc: MasterofZack (11276)
570241 2007-07-19 04:31:00 If your talking about windows update, which is done after you reinstall, yes, but there isn't a way of updating 'system files' during the install. wratterus (105)
570242 2007-07-19 04:50:00 Either use Windows Update after the install as wratterus said or you can download Autopatcher which is updated each month with all the windows updates.

570243 2007-07-19 16:31:00 If you take a naked pc onto the internet, I bet that in just under 30 seconds you will be so full of crap that you'll have to burn it all down and start again..

DO NOT go online if you don't already have SP-2 installed! That is an absolute!!!!

If on DSL, then get thee behind the firewall of a router at least!

I'd also get the free version of McAfee or Norton's that comes bundled on most systems at least. It will be obsolete, but you can get some protection for a while anyway...and it will think you are a new computer and give you a free trial period anyway..just don't use it after you get everything sorted out..they are (collectively) garbage and just for people who don't know any better.

Site Search here for opinions on the best AV stuff....

but I personally use:

AVG 7.5-FREE
Spybot S&D in advanced mode
XP Firewall (here comes da flames!)
Linksys BEFSR41 router for the physical firewall.

and of course, Firefox and not Internet Exploder.

ALSO: DO NOT GET WMP11! You'll be sorry! Stay with WMP 9 or just stop updating at WMP10, which I think is the best anyway.

It's been a long time since I've done this, but I think it'll download updates if you start the installation from within Windows (ie. a plain reinstall rather than a reformat).

Firewall
AV, then get updates.
Windows updates (about 80 of them).

570246 2007-07-20 05:45:00 A clean install is always best.
If your installing XP Download SP2 and your AV updates, hardware drivers and burn to CD prior to your reinstallation. You can install that, your AV and Firewall prior to opening it up to the net then.

You can slipstream (merged) a WinXp SP2 (if you only have WinXP SP1 or earlier) CD if you have the motivation.

No! Not a good idea! :horrified
Install Xp with Sp2, and at least an antivirus (and firewall prog if you dont use Xp's; Spybot or similar would be good too), before connecting to the internet, because you will be infected with worms (eww) within minutes (e.g. MSBlaster/Sasser).
