569907 2007-07-18 01:53:00 Hi, im new to pressf1.co.nz, and i want to know why it is that other computers can run games with awesome graphics (Like f.e.a.r) and the thing is i got a new laptop last christmas and whenever i play 3d games it gets slow, but if i adjust the camera angles (Ex. in FlyFF(3d game) to an top-down angle, it doesent get slow. but my friends have older computers that run these games perfectly. any help please?

The games get slow, not the computer, it's not a space issue

What is the Make/Model and specs of your Laptop?

569909 2007-07-18 02:05:00 Right, now let's see . . .

Are you comparing apples with apples? Like, are your friends' PCs also laptops or do they have desktop PCs?

Laptop PCs generally have integrated video graphics rather than separate graphics cards like gaming machines and that makes them a bit slower .

Laptop hard drives generally run slower than the desktop versions .

The amount of RAM has a big effect - more is better so you need to compare that as well .

The gamers will probably add others but those are the most likely reasons for the differences .

569910 2007-07-18 03:35:00 Yup its essentially what FoxyMX said above, it comes down to specs, A top of the line pc bought 4 years ago can still be better then a brand new laptop bought yesterday. pwaark (12563)
569911 2007-07-18 04:15:00 The laptop will run slower when running from the battery, because faster=less time on battery. Are you using it from the mains?

It might pay to check the power management options too. Sometimes the power saving can be a bit "over cautious", and that could cut your speed.

i got a new laptop

Laptops are not designed for gaming. There are two types of PC in the world:
1)Gaming PCs
2)The rest of them

Sell it and invest in a decent gaming PC with suitable specs for what you want to play.
pctek (84)
569913 2007-07-18 05:55:00 Well pctek nailed it.

To expand on whats been said a little - Laptops have less RAM, slower hard drives, Often specialised energy efficient processors, and integrated graphics usually sharing the main RAM.

None of these things are good for games - even a cheap desktop graphics card will out perform 99% of integrated ones.

You can buy gaming Laptops, but they are incredibly expensive and still won't match a cheaper desktop version

569914 2007-07-18 06:06:00 In addition to all the above points, laptops bought from stores like DSE, Harvey Norman etc. usually come with Norton antivirus pre-installed - that makes them behave like they are old before their time. hcl (10925)
569915 2007-07-18 06:14:00 . . . Sell it and invest in a decent gaming PC with suitable specs for what you want to play . This is a fairly expensive option . A 6 month old laptop will sell for a very disappointing price . A gaming computer will cost a lot .

A relatively slow computer will do "work" work very well . Games are much more demanding of resources .

Depending on what version of Norton... the latest one has been getting good reviews from gamers.
