569703 2007-07-17 10:42:00 I have successfully downloaded the latest Microsoft Security Update (KB928366) And despite several attempts, have consistently FAILED to instal it. The MS Help Forum shows that others have had the same problem but that Forum's annoying, unhelpful threads just meander along to nowhere. (They should take a look at PressF1 to see how a quality help forum is run)
ANy ideas for solving this please. I have Windows XP, S.P.2, and have installed every other Windows critical update for 2 yrs or so.

569704 2007-07-17 11:11:00 What does the error say??

Did you download it then install, or install it from the Windowsupdate site?

I take it .Net Framework 1.1 is installed?

Here is EXACTLY what you do to solve this problem for Windows XP 32
bit. If you happen to have a rarer 64 bit version, server OS, or
SOMETHING else follow the same general instructions but get the
version of the files appropriate for your system but first, Microsoft
has pissed me off beyond belief. I looked in my log and this same
thing happened 6/2006...thanks MSFT for torturing us again this year.
I thought it was a familiar feeling...nice branding...this is a huge
humiliation for their .NET team in my opinion or perhaps we should
start calling them the .NOT team...anyway....

Steps:
1) Go to the control panel and select the add/remove software tool
then TRY and remove everything with .NET in the name. If you can
remove everything go to step 3. If you cannot remove everything go to
step 2.

2) Go and download the windows installer clean up tool at:
support.microsoft.com

run the windows installer clean up tool and BE CAREFUL to only select
the .NET items from the list and remove them. Note: this will likely
leave the names as "dead links" in the Add/Remove Software list
(ahhh ...Microsoft thoroughness at its best) but not to worry they
will do no harm and will get fixed when we finish. It's possible to
clean them up but let's stay out of the registry :-)

3) Go and get the file "dotnetfx.exe" this is ".NET 1.1" from:

www.microsoft.com

install it.

4) Go and get the file "NDP1.1sp1-KB867460-X86.exe" this is the ".NET
1.1 service pack 1" from: my personal website (JUST KIDDING,
RELAX...get everything of course from a microsoft.com domain)

www.microsoft.com

install it.

5) Install the SECURITY patch, the dreaded KB928366, we have all grown
to hate. You can install it from the Windows Update program (be sure
to ONLY select the KB928366 patch and NOTHING else, we dont want to
put back 2.0 or 3.0 yet). It's OK go ahead and click ...it will be
alright...you can do it...it's just one more time... :-)

6) Re-run the Windows Update and you can add back in .NET 2.0 and 3.0

7) Post to thank me...

Now WHY hasn't Microsoft posted instructions yet? .... What is UP?!

Good night!

George

I take it . Net Framework 1 . 1 is installed?

my setting for critical Windows updates is "Download and instal" automatically .
but this one obviously had trouble installing on its own . So i manually went thru Windows Update .

First response i get is -
Download size (total): 0 KB *
Estimated time at your connection speed: 0 minutes *
(*Downloaded; ready to install)
which i take to mean "its already downloaded"

So i click "Instal" & get the message -
Initializing installation . . . done!
Installing Security Update for Microsoft . NET Framework, Version 1 . 1 Service Pack 1 (KB928366) (update 1 of 1) . . .

followed by -
Initializing installation . . . done!
Installing Security Update for Microsoft . NET Framework, Version 1 . 1 Service Pack 1 (KB928366) (update 1 of 1) . . . failed

Ive checked, and . Net Framework 1 . 1 is installed

569707 2007-07-20 00:36:00 Thanks to Press F1 and George this may solve my problem too. Interestingly when I emailed the OS god (microsoft) they wanted to CHARGE me for the privilege of fixing the problem. The mind boggles. Are they trying to shamelessly turn us to Vista? mcdon (5945)
569708 2007-07-20 05:22:00 I know it seems like a long winded explantion, but did you read my quote in my post above?? it addresses the exact same problem of KB928366 failing to install. bevy121 (117)

thanks for yr interest & help . Did you have this problem of KB 928366 failing to instal? If so, did you fix it by following the quoted solution?

I havent yet embarked on that solution as it gets into some unknown territory for me . I was waiting to see whether there are any more suggestions, especially from Speedy Gonzales who has been very helpful in the past .

569710 2007-07-21 11:52:00 I have a service pack 2 update that wont install, would i do the same? rob_on_guitar (4196)

No I havent needed to use this myself, but it does seem to be the same problem you have, and with positive replys from others, which is why I thought it may be usefull.
All he is telling you basicly is to try uninstalling any .net you currently have and reinstall in the order of
1 - ".NET 1.1"
2 - ".NET 1.1 service pack 1"
3 - "KB928366 security update" (install by itself)
4 - "Any other updates" (.NET 2.0 and 3.0 etc)

Rob
This is specificly for a KB928366 update failing to install, so wouldn't be applicable for other types of update failures -
You would be better to post your update that fails and any error message and someone may be able to shed some light on the problem
