570958 2007-07-21 07:24:00 my friend has a computer(dell) its about 2 years old and he has been having trouble with it so we decided to fromat his hdd and install vista. but what we thought was a software problem may not be it, the pc when it starts it says there is a diskette 0 problem but it boots into vista and while on in the first 30 minutes to 1hour windows explorer keeps needing to restart. he barely started taking computer repair courses so before we formated and installed vista we had taken apart the pc and cleaned of any dust, also before the pc use to make a weird clicking noise sometimes but after we took it apart cleaned it and put it back together it stopped making the noise but we still have this problem, sorry for rambling:D but can you please help me help my friend cause he cant afford to get a new pc till december. deathracer (11825)
570959 2007-07-21 07:37:00 Is there a disk in the floppy why its bringing up errors??

On bootup??

Is the hard drive the bootdisk in the BIOS??

Did someone take the cable off the floppy and put it back the wrong way??

When you boot up, does the floppy LED stay on?? This is telling u its the wrong way round (the cable).

When u took it apart did u remove the battery?? If u did, did someone reconfigure the BIOS?

570960 2007-07-21 10:05:00 well :D kind of ashamed to say this but my friend wasnt the kindest person to his pc so his face for the case isnt there anymore so i cant tell what lights do what he is the one that knows cause he took it apart but he put everything back together right:thumbs: i can asure that, it does the diskette 0 problem on boot up before any of the microsoft things come up, yes we put everything in the bios back to normal and we didnt take out the battery cause i didnt want to mess it up but i dont think he has a floppy drive(not sure about this i will double check with him though, i know i helped take it apart but i didnt pay attention for the floppy cause well its a floppy no offense) deathracer (11825)
570961 2007-07-21 12:05:00 if the bios has been set to defaults it'll be most likely lookin for a floppy drive on bootup and not findin it if theres not one there.......that'll be causing the 'diskette' error.........you can fix that in the bios just take a look ......'disable floppy seek at bootup'......as for vista on a 2yr old dell.......what's the system specs does it really have enuf grunt to run it?.......how much ram what cpu ? drcspy (146)
570962 2007-07-21 12:45:00 At the risk of getting shot down in flames, this is exactly my point - the machine develops a fault so the automatic response is "Let's format the hard drive and install / reinstall etc".

As it showed here, it wasn't the magic silver bullet.

I rest my case.

570963 2007-07-21 14:12:00 Yes, the one time where a clean reformat won't solve issues. Not doing anything or simply deleting masses of files would have been so much better huh supertrouper? beeswax34 (63)
570964 2007-07-21 18:49:00 the real reason we did that is cause his pc would run slow and had all sorts of viruses so instead of putting an antivirus he had a friend reinstall xp on it, so he had 2 xp boots but still no antivirus so when i finally looked at it the pc was running limewire wich had downloaded all sorts of porn(5gb if you must know). the pc is an intel celeron 2.4 ghz, 512mb ram and 32mb memory graphics so i decided just to put basic on his. the only problem we have know is that he :badpc: kicked his computer on anger:mad: a couple of times wich may have caused some internal problems. deathracer (11825)
570965 2007-07-21 18:57:00 the pc specs are too low to run any kind of vista with any reasonable success.....as for this:
when i finally looked at it the pc was running limewire wich had downloaded all sorts of porn

well actually it's not Limewire which had download the porn it's your friend.....tell them to grow a brain......and installing another operating system without antivirus is just plain dumb....

570966 2007-07-21 19:13:00 so i should just reinstall xp? the reason i said that it was a virus downloading porn is cause this was after his other friend had done the reinstall of xp and all the complete downloaded porn was in the incomplete folder so i told him that it was probrably his friend but yeah i didnt want to ruin thier frienship in anyway, so i told him it could have been a virus but if your wondering he doesnt download porn he likes to collect the dvd's:lol: plus it was the same porn file downloaded multiple times but i didnt open it cause i didnt want to cause more damage . deathracer (11825)
570967 2007-07-21 19:19:00 Well you could get ccleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com)

To get rid of the temp files / crap on it, get hijackthis in my sig, if you think its got malware/spyware etc on it, put it in its own folder, run it then and post the log here.

Get trojan remover remover in my sig, install it update it then do a scan.

See if it picks up / can remove anything.

Get rogueremover in my sig, install and update it and click on scan, see if it picks up any rogue software.
