570934 2007-07-22 06:47:00 No one said other wise.

Brand name PC's are crap right across the board, By the time you get into the higher price bracket where you have a better chance of quality hardware they are no longer cost effictive, and still generally have crap hardware and retarded software configurations.

But...you know that already.

Could be said about some so called "hardware designers because we aren't like the mainstream guys!".

Dell, (I haven't bought one for three years, and my ex ran off with that) wasn't too bad. It did the job I bought it for. The one's I did upgrade, I managed ok with adding parts (most noticeably video cards).

570935 2007-07-22 07:45:00 A Dell will do fine, as long as your expectations are low.

Hence they are fine as low powered office machines, email for the grannies, Net surfing, whatever.

You can however always do better.

I used to run a gaming server off one, quite well. From memory, back in 2001 it cost me $1,200 nz.

When was the last time you bought a Dell? Yes, I realise you can do better, but can't you always?

570937 2007-07-22 08:53:00 I have never bought a Dell, I choose to do better.

For whats its worth I have owned a dozen or so, worked on dozens more, and trashed a large number of them.

Horrible ugly PC's.

I'd say your poor advice probally confused him.

Do you use the cheapest fittings when you fix a hose?

570941 2007-07-22 10:28:00 Michael8 (Dell) :p

If your pc is still under warranty, call the Dell helpdesk. If it is not under warranty consider taking it to your local pc shop (if you have one still in business) - unless Mets suggestion that it could be faulty ram is the problem and you have replaced it.

570942 2007-07-22 20:53:00 All the Compaq/HP/Acer/Dell stuff is designed as business machines, or internet/home office machines.

Forget it for much of anything else.

Support is usually about as exciting as calling Xtra or IRD.

Parts vary, most are cheap and nasty.

This is why we techs don't like them.

Having said that, I have seen a few very old HPs in the hideous tiny cases, with Seagate drives and ASUS motherboards. Which would explain why they were still going after so long.

None of the new ones I've seen so far have anything decent in them.

Its whats inside that matters, not the label on the outside which is meaningless.

That probably rings true for PCs.
