570854 2007-07-21 22:23:00 That is also why Microsoft bundled IE with Windows to illegally force Netscape out of the market

I call that playing catch-up. Someone else thinks of these things first, MS comes late to the party. Regardless of whether they then crush everyone else.

Like GUI O/Ss. And all sorts of other things I could go on about.

You and me both I think.

The other thing the original poster mentioned was would they still be able to use XP in 2012- something tells me the way we use computers is about to change - touch screen- which will make clicking with a mouse in XP in 2012 irrelevant. The iPhone is the first of the devices that operates via "touch" screen.

570856 2007-07-22 05:44:00 If windows vienna is coming out in 2009 it would be mega dumb to buy vista wouldnt it?

570857 2007-07-22 05:54:00 Do you think based on Microsoft's past history that Vienna will be worth upgrading to? winmacguy (3367)
570858 2007-07-22 08:59:00 re first post Windows 98 was based on good ol dos. XP & Vista are "NT" based and touted as being more secure but are proving to be just as vulnerable as the OSs they've replaced.

As for Vienna touted as being a complete rehash. MS has proven time and time again they've failed to deliver what was originally promised. You've just got to look at the features dropped from Vista. I can't see that changing. There'd be a big customer backlash if it doesn't have backward compatibility IMHO.

Will it be worth upgading to? Only time will tell. That it'll be released later than expected is a no-brainer and by that time Vista will be at SP2 or more ;).

alsoTouch screens have been around for a while already. You just need to look at those digital photo imaging machines you see at K-Mart ect to see one in action. It's just the Apple is marketing it more aggressively on a consumer toy, opps I mean device.

This box runs win98 and has given me stirling service. So what if MS doesn't "support" it any more. Run a firewall, don't use IE(get rid of it entirely is ideal), use a few usefull utilities to sort out malware/virus's etc, keep away from porn sites and the worlds your oyster. There's still plenty of info out there and helpfull folk when needed. My next main machine will have OSX or Linux.

Oh and my backup PC, when this one's being used by other family members, runs GNU/Linux.

I believe that there is a considerable amount of difference between the touch screen UI of a K Mart imageing machine and the swipe/stroke style interface of the iPhone. Also if you look at the cover flow style art of iTunes (which I am using a lot at the moment) and incorporate that with the iPhone style touch screen you would have to be blind not to see the refinements.

Also don't forget that Leopard will pretty much run Vista natively thus eliminating the need for having 2 machines - unless your a hard core gamer then you would just have a custom built PC. Leopard looks like it will also be using the Zeta byte file system licensed from Sun which is a marked improvement over the current HFS that Apple uses and light years ahead of anything that Windows will have for a while.

570860 2007-07-22 09:33:00 Also don't forget that Leopard will pretty much run Vista natively thus eliminating the need for having 2 machines With Boot Camp you can run Vista on the new Macs. Which is not surprising as the new Macs are produced by ASUS using intel architecture, ie PCs. Bonez (10505)
570861 2007-07-22 09:48:00 You can with Bootcamp although I have a feeling that Apple is going to take that a step further. I use Parallels on my iMac to run XP. winmacguy (3367)
570862 2007-07-22 10:09:00 Interesting times ahead alright. Bit OT -just been looking at the US Dell site and they'e offering PCs with Ubuntu pre-installed, which I knew about but they've also got an option with FreeDos bundled without an OS actually installed, which I found interesting. Bonez (10505)
570863 2007-07-22 10:45:00 Dell is having a major drop in revenues so it is looking at different sales models which include a new marketing push, selling Linux and selling PCs with XP instead of Vista since no one wants to by Vista.

Microsoft might have shipped 40 million copies but people are removing the preinstalled versions and replacing them with XP just as fast.
