572053 2007-07-24 10:33:00 It appears you chose to download the "Alternative" version of the CD which is not a LiveCD.

quote:
The Alternate CD includes a text based installer for low memory, LVM or RAID installs.

You should be using a standard CD, that is also a LiveCD. If you have broadband, you could just install the PC World Ubuntu version and then add the KDE desktop to your system by using the package manager.

572054 2007-07-24 11:03:00 You shouldn't be having those speed issues to be honest.
I ran PCLinuxOS 2007 on my ancient PC that I use as a file/print server. This PC has an Intel Pentium II 350MHz CPU with 224 MB and a 3dfx Voodoo Rush driving a 19" widescreen LCD. Needless to say, the liveCD booted... KDE through up the occasional error, but that was to be expected with the amount of RAM it had on hand). Once loaded, KDE was responsive enough - a bit slow, but definetely not unusable.
I tired loading Ubuntu liveCD as well, but for some reason Ubuntu + 3dfx voodoo rush + 19" LCD != happy happy joy joy... (I got a nice message on my monitor that the optimum settings was 1440x900 @ 60Hz)
If I were you, I would get the standard (K)ubuntu LiveCD and try that.

(for those that are curious, I ended up sticking Debian etch on to that machine along with samba. It now works perfectly)

572055 2007-07-24 22:05:00 You could also try Xubuntu (http://www.xubuntu.org/) which uses a lighter gui than KDE or Gnome. autechre (266)
572056 2007-07-24 22:24:00 Hi Jen,
That install went wrong. I got a long list of permission denied stuff. The reason for this is your setting of the 'noexec' flag on your root filesystem. Noexec means that no user (not even root) can run programs that live on that partition. The result is a system that will run the kernel, but spit out 'permission denied' if you attempt to run anything else - and a system that won't run anything other than the kernel is pretty useless 'cause it won't boot properly.

'nosuid' is also a dangerous one to play with - every linux install has some legitimate suid binaries in the (usually) /sbin and /bin directories. If you set nosuid, these will run as the user you are logged in as rather than the user that owns them (usually root), and this will break things too. Leave this option off unless it's a secondary partition rather than the one on which your root filesystem lives.

I was going to do a graphic install but this version of Kubuntu that I have is not a live CD. There is no graphic install option that I can see.
I'm going to give it one more try before I go to bed. If its no good I will have to find a live CD version.I strongly recommend you download a livecd version. The text-mode installer is what, under [k]ubuntu, passes for the 'advanced' installer, and it sounds like you're not quite ready to be presented with this many options. The graphical installer should allow you to do what you need without confusing you.

572057 2007-07-24 23:26:00 You will also find that KDE will run slightly slower than Gnome.

572058 2007-07-25 07:47:00 [citation required]No hard facts, just personal experience with a low powered machine that ran both KDE and Gnome on seperate installs (same distro, same hardware, the only thing different was the DE). Besides, KDE has more effects etc than Gnome, which in turn require slightly more computing power Myth (110)
572059 2007-07-25 10:23:00 Reply to all,
Sorry about not replying sooner. I have had things to do.
A lot of information here for me to digest. Looks like I need a different version of the CD or maybe the Xubuntu version could be better for my setup.
The basic use will be internet browsing, email and document creation & editing. Good on networking and file transfer. Easy to use file manager. I am not much into the eye candy stuff as long as the buttons and tabs are easy to use. I do however want it to be as quick as the system hardware will allow.
The last install is working but slow. there is no way that I can see in the Adept Manager to uninstall the surplus apps that I don't need. e.g the Multimedia,Graphics, and some of the Utilities & Internet stuff.
Perhaps another distro may be better for my needs. I did try Puppy Linux 2.16 and it was fast but the word processing and file management was very limited.
Thanks everyone for the input so far.
Any more help most welcome.

572060 2007-07-25 10:35:00 Incidentally, there are other desktop environments (apart from Gnome and KDE). I assume Ubuntu has these in its repositories...
xfce, openbox, fluxbox, enlightenment

These are more minimalistic than Gnome or KDE, which means they will generally run faster. I personally use fluxbox (with KDE applications). Its a choice you will have to make, usually after a bit of trial and error

572061 2007-07-25 11:31:00 Thanks Myth,
The main point behind this experiment is to find a replacement to Win 2000Pro that was originally on this box and at the same time increase my linux knowledge. Win2000Pro has been a good system, probably MS best ever. However after 64 critical updates and fixes and 4 Service Packs it runs like treacle unless you have more modern hardware than I have. Mainly I think because the quality of some of the updates isnt very high. No prizes for guessing why. However unless something better comes along I may have to revert. I have 3 other comps on my LAN all WinXP SP2 but the Linux one if I ever get it working like I want will be my main storage and backup.
Thanks again everyone.

572062 2007-07-26 02:26:00 Unfortunately, as people try to make Linux resemble Windows it will need more and more resources .

More memory would help a lot .

None of those "speed up" options will make much improvement in speed . Most are security related as you found when you had a totally secure system which would do nothing . ;)

The main culprit will be the GUI (whether KDE or Gnome) . GUIs are greedy . They seem to use a lot of script code to provide the "fiendly user environment" . Interpreted scripts are big, and need a lot of processing .
