573268 2007-07-27 08:54:00 I have an old Hp unit that I am reluctant to get rid of, but would like to turn it into a storage system to prevent cluttering up my used pc's. at the moment it has an OS of windows xp home installed along with a recovery partition, is it possible for me to strip the main drive to allow me storage space whilst keeping the recovery partion for emergency purpose. If this is possible what do I need and how do I do it?
My normal network is wireless all round but this drive would be hard wired and I would want to make it visible to all PC's on the network.
Can somebody give me an idea of what to do please

573269 2007-07-27 09:22:00 Just put a wireless card or adapter in it, if you want it on the network and configure it / share a folder like the others.

Hopefully, the hdd is big enough, since you want to keep the hidden partition on it. Or else its going to fill up pretty quick.

Storage space as in what? Just keeping updates for Windows on it?

Files youve downloaded? What?

573270 2007-07-27 09:34:00 It is an 80gb hard drive and is just neede for keeping files etc on, can I format the main drive removing the OS (I want to keep the recovery partition)and then just plug into the network and use it or is it a little more involved than that the_inspector (7721)

573272 2007-07-27 09:39:00 Just configure it the same way you did the others .

I dont think the recovery partition will stay there, if u format it . Isnt there a program on the hdd to burn it to cd or dvd??

It'll be better to burn it to cd or dvd then format it .

No - you cannot remove the OS since the OS provides the networking features to connect the hard drive to the other PCs.

573275 2007-07-28 06:04:00 If the "old HP" is a complete PC and your just keeping it to store files on why not remove the Hard Drive completely and add it to your current PC. You can then format it and use it's total storage. Bantu (52)

I don't necessarily like that option . . . it steals a lot from the redundancy factor which he is trying to create .

Since you stated that it runs XP . . then it must be new enough to still be a viable unit . . . how about just taking the critical, non-opsys files off it and then run the NIC in it to a router and open up filesharing?

Seems a lot easier and then you'd also have a second puter available if you loser the new primary tower temporarily .

If this person has one hard drive with two partitions and the recovery partition is hidden which is usual with HP and other PCs then this person only formats the one partition I would think .
