572878 2007-07-26 03:56:00 So I have a question

From windows Me and before that anyone can steal a copy of your windows cd in and type the serial key and use it.

But for Windows Xp requires activation thru the internet or the phone.

If someone came over and stole my windows cd can he install it on his computer?

What if i purchase a new computer?Does that mean I have to buy a new windows xp ?

Can you only use windows xp on the very first computer?

572879 2007-07-26 03:59:00 You can only activate one cd-key on each computer. msnforum (11610)
572880 2007-07-26 04:03:00 It's always been true that anyone could use "your" CD (or set of floppies) and install an OS. The serial number, or registration code, or activation code, printed on a piece of paper, has always been the unique identifier of your copy. So someone can install "your" CD on their computer. But they'll need to "activate" it. If they've written down your code, they should be rejected in the activation stage.

I think MS sell you a licence to use the OS on one computer. If you sell the computer, the new owner should buy a newly licenced copy of the OS. ;) If you buy a new computer, you should buy a new licenced copy of the OS. :D

572881 2007-07-26 04:32:00 the full version of XP can be transferred to another PC providing it is uninstalled first. You would most likely have to contact microsoft to do this.

OEM versions are licensed for the hardware they are supplied with and cannot be transferred (unless you can convince microsoft it's an upgrade of the same pc).

although in theory two PC's can't have the same windows key activated at the same time I've been told by a few people that it sometimes works providing you wait a few months between activations and don't do it too often.

572882 2007-07-26 05:09:00 Actually, it's possible. All you gotta do is ring them up and say some reason which I won't say here, as long as you don't do it often.

Dear I say, myself and two brothers are all using the same legit copy of XP.

572883 2007-07-26 05:37:00 "Legit"? I think Microsoft would use another word. Graham L (2)
572884 2007-07-26 05:50:00 Well, the copy itself is legit, the copIES aren't I guess, but hey, they let me use it, I just went along with them :P --Wolf-- (128)
