572686 2007-07-25 17:53:00 I have just bought a 250 GB external hard disc and want to backup the internal ones. I tried the one in the Microsoft Power Toys, but it reported several dozen errors per GB!

errors are not wanted. :groan:

So what do you use?:)

572687 2007-07-25 20:30:00 seagate disk tools - for disk images = acronis with limited features for free = excellent.

images can be mounted to extract individual files

I wouldn't even bother.

You can either make an Image of the whole drive. Or if you just want to backup your data, then Windows Explorer, copy and paste is all you need.

Just copy all your pics, muisc, docs etc over to the external.

It's free.
The PC World CD/DVD has had a copy on it for a long time.
Just set up a profile and schedule it to run every 30 minutes.
I have an external drive that I plug in at home. Syncback keeps a copy of everything up to date on the external drive. I take the drive to work and plug it into my machine there that is also running SyncBack. The profile at work copies everything I backed up off the external drive and places a copy of it on my work machine. So I have backups in multiple locations with very little effort.
When Syncback detects that the destination drive is not present is fails gracefully and quietly until it detects it is plugged in once again.
Have set it up for many people, most who are just using a USB flash drive as a backup destination for their most important files.

572691 2007-07-26 03:24:00 I have downloaded this (www.majorgeeks.com) but have yet to try it myself. I understand that it has a good reputation.
