2007-07-25 02:58:00 | Parents want a new desktop computer at around $1200. Should they go to Dicksmith and grab a Acer, compaq or HP. Or should I go to Ascent and get a computer built from them. or there is anyone else you can recommend.

2007-07-25 04:00:00 | I would probably opt for Dicksmith myself, otherwise if your ascent computer has problems they are going to moan at you, however if they buy a name brand from dicksmith they can go moan to the company. | JSF_enthusiast (8536) | |

The quality of the components in Dick Smith PCs are crap, though, and would be a lot more likely to have a problem than an Ascent PC, or a PC from a independent company, as long as they use decent components. |

2007-07-25 04:20:00 | Go to www.ascent.co.nz or www.qmb.co.nz or www.oczone.co.nz and ask them to build the best they could for $1200. I recently made calculations using OCZone's pricings and I was able to get a system with E6850/Q6600, 2GB RAM, 320GB HDD, and 8600GTS for only $1400. Bet you Dicksmith and the likes can't do that deal even with $2000.

2007-07-25 04:21:00 | wmoore How would you feel about building your parents a new PC? There is enough great advice on this board to help you through it. I built a good P4 system for my daughter last year with some parts sourced from Trademe both new and used plus a few bits from online stores. Entire thing came in at around $1000 although we used existing monitor, keyboard and mouse.
