| 572895 | 2007-07-26 23:29:00 | I try out a lot of programs! Maybe check out Altiris Creates a virtual layer to install stuff on, if things turn to custard you delete the layer and all is well. It was recomended in PC World Mag a few months ago. Since then Symantec own it so its probably gone downhill since they got it. |

Use the cd-utility disc that comes with the new hdd for the utility to do this part . Put your files and saved things on your old hdd . . hopefully it's larger that the root drive, which is what you just created in the 40g . Turn off System Restore because with a copy of your OPSYS and the results from Belarc, you are now fireproof and can re-install all over if you get so bad you can't clean out your troubles . Presto! You've saved a lot of hdd space from system restore points and system snapshots and you can easily clean your OPSYS out once a year, not messing with the files and folders at all as they are on a different drive . Using a 40g for the root is usually more than enough space to hold XP . . . but I don't know about Vista . . . and at the moment, I don't need to be educated about it . :rolleyes: Another good thing is to set your CCleaner to remove the Windows and Micro$oft uninstall files from your rootdrive too . These just take up a lot of space and aren't needed anyway . :cool: PS: I seem to remember that youse guys in NZ have some sort of trouble getting those new hdd utility cd's . . right? Let me know if so . . they aren't restricted as to copy or rip and I could send some to you . . . . maybe to a centralized "librarian" between the two islands who can loan them out or make copies as needed . I checked and there are NO restrictions on copying these utilities, as each one is brand-selective and I figure the companies like to have them floating around betwixt friends and buddies . |

| 572897 | 2007-07-27 05:06:00 | Isn't there a way to clear all previous system restore data? I think I did that and it cleared up heaps of space, maybe this will help? I know I always make a system restore before installing programs like windows blinds, desktop themes, dodgey programs etc because it's so simple just to restore and bam they're gone. |

If you turn system restore off (in system properties) and reboot the PC it clears out the SR cache. Then after the reboot turn it on again, and youll start from fresh. |

I guess so . . . just to got your Control Panel and >>SYSTEM and click the box to TURN OFF SYSTEM RESTORE ON ALL DRIVES, and then close the Control Panel and go back and re-open it again, reversing what you just did and restore SYSTEM RESTORE . But I actually like using the VM from Windows . . . it's free and you can see if there's any compatibility problems too by using it . If you get a virus or malware, then it hasn't entered your system . . . it won't write to your hdd either . This is kinda like using the USERS profile and not being an ADMINISTRATOR for all intents and purposes . . . only it isn't . |

| 572900 | 2007-07-30 04:32:00 | And thats exactly why I still use it. But why can I have only 1 (the last one done) restore point? | DaveMac (2886) | ||
| 572901 | 2007-07-30 04:47:00 | Well if you're only using SR for programs, instead of uninstalling them, u wont get far. | Speedy Gonzales (78) | ||
| 572902 | 2007-08-02 22:31:00 | Yes, thats what usually happens. (The comp freezes, and requires a hard reset ..). At that point, it's nice to be able to restore to a previous time |

Checked had max space for System Restore and been OK since. Had clean computer vide all the bells and whistles so don't ask me why. |
