572816 2007-07-26 01:13:00 Most of the LCD's I looked at when I upgraded only had the DVI, I thought that was the standard now.

Thats true. Altho, I spose it depends on what you want. DVI or VGA.

I would say LCD's will still have both.

I cant really tell the diff on these.

This uses DVI (and has 2 VGA connections as well, why I dont know)!

The other PC here uses VGA, (only because the other monitor doesnt have DVI, it's only got VGA).

Both look the same to me.

Yup, there's nothing wrong with widescreens, (these are widescreens), dont know why anyone would want a 4:3 anyway.

572817 2007-07-26 05:47:00 It seems that any 4:3 monitor over 20" is VERY expensive compared to their widescreen counterparts. Also seems very scarce as well.
To get a monitor like that means you will probably have to spend big $$

the project I have in mind needs a 4X3 :-(

DVI is no big problem, I can get a DVI video card.

may have to settle for a 20" for $499 at Quay computers
I am not paying twice the price for another inch.

MAME is an emulator for a lot of early arcade and console games. Its a windows thing ;)

572822 2007-07-26 06:34:00 Ah, a Windows gamer thing. The last time I played games on computer was Pac Man on our old Apple at home (about 1984) winmacguy (3367)

572825 2007-07-26 13:37:00 LOL . . . advert for widescreen :
"That’s exactly what you get with the XXX widescreen LCD monitors . Wide 16:10 aspect ratios let you multitask, with room for more than one application at a time . . . "

Now let's do some arithmetic:
My Philips 17" (diagonal) is 338 x 270mm = 16:13 aspect ratio (nearly)

The Philips 22" widescreen is 473 x 291mm = 16:10 aspect ratio (about)

Thus the widescreen has less screen real estate relatively speaking . . .

so, let's say I want to "multitask" on the widescreen and have Word open on one side and Excel on the other .
Equal size windows means that both would be 236 x 291mm max .

Hey! these sizes mean I have to put up with SMALLER windows for both programs . That's a bit of downer . . . . and I thought I was getting MORE for my $$$!

If I go back to having Word full screen, everything seems sort of s . t . r . e . t . c . h . e . d out - not a good look and, fitting Word into 'normal' size, the remaining 'free' space is useless .

and . . . most of the bits of paper I read and the docs on my screen are portrait oriented . Why are we being asked to stare at landscape screens with portrait oriented documents on them?

Kind of stupid really - but that's what the industry people have sold us . . . less stuff for the same price (= more profit for them) .
Cynical? - well yes of course . . .
