574181 2007-07-30 05:39:00 hi there,
Just about to buy a new pc have it narrowed down to the 2 following PCs

1. CPU:AMD Athlonx2 64bit dualcore 4000+ AM2 2.1GHz 1MB L2 Cache
MB: Asus All in one motherboard DDR2-800 PCI-E 16X SATA 2 & RAID
w/onboard 128MB Geforce 6100 graphics
RAM:1GB DDR2-667
HDD:80GB Seagate SATAII 7200rpm HDD
Optical Drive:20xDouble layer DVDRW
Integrated Sound/Lan
CASE: 400W ATX case with 2 front usb ports

2. Midi Case Tower
Intel Pentium D 3.0 Ghz LGA 775 CPU
(Dual Core)
ASUS P5VD2-MX All in one M/B
(Onboard Audio/Video/LAN)
1GB DDR2 RAM
160GB 7200rpm S-ATA HDD
18x DVD Writer, Support Dual Layer

Any one reccommend one or the other whats better AMD or Intel pentium D im getting more confused the more i read. All i do is browse the net watch vids use word nothing to out of the oridnary. Im not interested in a video card or sound card at the moment but will probably add a bigger hard drive shortly after purchase. So can any one tell me which PC would be quicker as speed is pretty much the most important factor for me i also have a spare 1gb stick of ddr2 ram at home to add to it aswell, if that makes a difference also it will be running windows vista premium most likely, any help is much appreciated.

Thanks

What sort of price have you been quoted for the two systems?

574185 2007-07-30 05:58:00 Intel vs AMD is a personal preference. I prefer Intel.
Look at the reviews of the boards and cpu's you have chosen on Toms Hardware Page or better still toss a coin as Cicero says they are very similar.

574186 2007-07-30 06:33:00 Go for the AMD CPU. That's what I did on my new system last year, the 3800 version of the one you are proposing, on a Gigabyte motherboard. The fan is nice and quiet too. rumpty (2863)

Ive been quoted about $650-700 for both systems plus or minus a few dollards here and there including windows vista installed seems prety reasonable to me thats not including a screen tho

574188 2007-07-30 07:23:00 DO NOT GET THE INTEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have that mobo (P5VD2-MX) it is absolute crap. The onboard video is completely useless. It struggles just running windows (let alone any game in any resolution) in 1024x768 or above, the screen stutters. the RAM slots only support up to DDR2 PC4200 - So 533mhz. The list goes on.

The AMD mobo is PCI-E so any upgrade of a video card will be easy and cheaper. The ram is faster. The DVD writer is faster. Don't know which processor is better someone else can answer that.

Well thanks that does sound very usefull, im still unsure about AMD CPUs just ive never had one before only ever had intel which has never let me down untill recently but thats another story. But i am willing to give AMD a go just is the amd 4000 a good speed for the odd game here and there and vidoes etc nothing to demanding really

574190 2007-07-30 08:04:00 Really it depends what you're doing, Intel with their larger caches are often better for media encoding etc, but then again AMDs integrated memory controller is better than Intel's on-chipset one .

Currently I beleive that the Core 2 are better than AMD, but then when AMD releases their next line of CPU, they will probably be better than Core 2 . (but then this is Pentium D)

In my experience AMD is cheaper, and that's a good reason I buy them, other reason I've had quite a few and I like them quite a bit now, Plus if you're into ATi video cards, it might be a benefit to get AMD for better performance/compatibility (in the future)

No doubt an AMD cpu, ATi video card and AMD chipset motherboard will (should) work together much better . (but I don't know how good AMD's current chipsets are compared to nforce, and then I use nVidia GFX . )

Again, it's preference, but I would get the AMD system, like Fishy says, the Intel's onboard graphics are horrible compared to the AMD .

The 4000+ is great and I think a little better than the Pentium there, and overall the AMD system looks like the better one .

What speed is the DDR2 RAM you already have, though??

And do you have the model number of the motherboard for the AMD system? I don't see it mentioned anywhere . . .
