573417 2007-07-29 05:35:00 Could be the NICs themselves.

Things would most probably move faster if everything was gigabit.

Could be firewalls or as Tweake said AV programs.

Altho I havent had probs with Avast running and xferring files.

573418 2007-07-29 05:51:00 your pcs don't have ancient old 10M network cards do they? because that would be almost the right kind of speed for a 10M network if you mean the transfer speed reported by windows which is in bytes 700 * 8 to give bits = 5.6M, a little low but you can never achieve the actual stated speed of a network due to overheads etc.

also depends on whether there's any other network traffic going on at the time, and make sure you only copy 1 file at a time using windows file sharing as it really can't handle multiple copies at once.

You could get a crossover cable and connect 2 pc's directly together, and see what transfer speeds that gives you. Or unplug 3 of the 5 from the switch to see if that makes a difference.

Also how long have you had the switch, you're sure it's not a hub? because hubs run much slower than swithces

573419 2007-07-29 08:45:00 Thats most useful advice.
I have copied the information from the "box" - it says its a N-Way switch.........presume thats right.

Also, yes I am copying more than one file at a time, so will change that and see if it helps.

As for the "old Cards" - maybe this is the problem as they are several years old in all cases. How do I tell?

Incidentally, network not being used for anything else at the same time (including Internet) and I have tried with Avast shut down as thought it might have been trying to virus check everything on the way through, - but no.

573420 2007-07-29 08:50:00 What does it say theyre connected at??

10, 100? or 1GB? If any are gigabit adapters.

Click on the 2 monitors in the taskbar.

573421 2007-07-29 09:38:00 Remove IPv6 from the Vista PC NIC's.... SolMiester (139)
573422 2007-07-29 10:02:00 It says "speed" 100 Mbps but that looks like a fixed figure.........
I will have a go at disconnecting IPv6 in the morning, - thanks for the tips.

573423 2007-07-29 21:39:00 just to clarify the comment I made about multiple copies at once - it's ok to select a group of files all together and copy them in one go, windows will do them one at a time anyway. Just don't start one transfer, then start another while that one's still copying - both will crawl until one finishes, this is true even from one hdd to another in the same pc, but especially so over a network. dugimodo (138)
573424 2007-07-29 21:52:00 Thanks for clarifying that........often wondered why transfers between disks could be slow when copying several folders not selected together....... Sergio (928)
