573855 2007-07-29 07:08:00 I have got a small problem where I bought a 2.5" USB enclosure for laptop hard drive. I can see the drive under disk drives in device manager but doesnt show up under disk management.

Any ideas, thanks.

573856 2007-07-29 07:48:00 Have you tried rebooting with the Drive attached?

You could try removing all the USB1/2 devices from the device manager and let XP re-install them before you connect the USB HDD again.

573857 2007-07-29 08:06:00 What version of Windows is on it?

If 2k is SP4 installed? If XP, is SP1 or 2 installed?

573859 2007-07-29 10:31:00 Dont think the drive is formatted.

Have tried to start with drive/USB cable plugged in, no luck.

Running XP pro with SP2.

Might try play around with drivers...

Unless the drive is partitioned and formatted you will have problems . One partition or several . Your choice . Have you tried Start, Control Panel, Admin Tools, Computer Management, Disk management?

You will have to create at least one partition and one drive . Try right click and format the drive . Ensure you do not format your boot drive like C:

Be careful .

Bang on... the drive doesn't have to be formatted to show up in disk management. I use disk mamagement to format my newly attached drives.

Are you able to format the drive in Windows Explorer? I would suggest removing then reconnecting the drive and do a complete cold boot. Don't plug the drive in after Windows has started up.

Cheers

573864 2007-07-30 04:59:00 Have tried attaching it while booting but no luck.

Doesnt show up under disk management.

Shows up under device manager as "Generic USB Disk USB Device" under disk drives.
