| 575020 | 2007-08-01 09:34:00 | My son has left his Mac computer with me for "safekeeping" while he is overseas. So I thought I would see if it would connect to the internet. Plugged in an ethernet cable from my router, went to Network in System Prefs, all looked promising, as it seemed to be configured automatically. It had even been given an IP address, 10.1.1.3, same as the computer I had just unplugged from. Opened Safari, and away we went, browsing the web! Talk about easy. However, do I need to be running any security stuff? Software firewall, anti-virus, etc etc? I don't think this machine has any of that. |

| 575024 | 2007-08-01 10:04:00 | There are a number of anti Mac users on this forum. Your sons Mac is fine as it is, you have no need to worry about any PC virus or spyware. Enjoy :) If it is a new Mac then it will be using Tiger (aka OS X 10.4) You can also surf the net using Firefox which is what I use.:) OS X has a built in firewall which is located the System prefs under sharing if your wanting to check if it is turned on. |

I personally prefer it over Safari which was actually updated earlier today by Apple. I'm currently using Firefox. The installation/uninstall process is very simple. | winmacguy (3367) | ||

Im not anti-mac. I just have a deep hatred for the company ever since they started designing a mouse that looks like an over sized pill and is probably the most uncomfortable piece of computer hardware out there. Considering it is standard for a machine that is cemented in an industry where mouse control is everything. |

| 575028 | 2007-08-01 10:28:00 | So use a PC mouse then. The Mac mouse has always been an issue of contention with a lot of Mac users too. I personally don't mind it. The only one I didn't like was the Hockey Puck mouse. I tend to use both keyboard and mouse when doing layouts as it is faster than just using the mouse for everything. | winmacguy (3367) | ||

WE are just sick of hearing how mac can do this, and mac can do that, and you dont need that in a mac, or you dont need to use that in a mac (and these comments are usually posted in non-mac relevant threads). When you shove something down someones throat long enough, of course they are going to learn to hate it. Its like a non-stop monologue, initiated by one one particular poster in this forum. Can you guess who? Addition: just one final comment, ever notice, of all the Linux users in this forum; that not one of us does the same thing ("Linux can do this, and Linux can do that, and Linux was made by so and so who should be <insert deity here>"). Sure we might say that Linux does what we want, and we prefer this distro, but generally we sit back, enjoy the system we have set up, and help others with it where we can |
