574509 2007-07-31 08:53:00 I have an old laptop (an Acer Travelmate 506DX) and the hard drive is croaking (Windows 98 shows disk read errors, Word crashes etc.). I'm looking at a few newish drives on TradeMe ranging from 4GB to 60GB. I was wondering if a laptop that old could support a 60GB hard drive (the existing is 4.8GB and Google is not my friend in this case ;))? pcuser42 (130)
574510 2007-07-31 09:22:00 A BIOS update if you can find it, might let you use hdd's bigger than 4 - 10 GB. Speedy Gonzales (78)
574511 2007-07-31 10:16:00 It's been a while since I worked on this model but from memory they had a dodgy HDD connector that would cause hdd read errors etc and make it look like the HDD was failing.

If you can, unscrew the HDD and remove it from the laptop and have a look at the connector that plugs into the HDD which is then plugged into the mainboard.
If the connectors on it are gold coloured then this is not the problem. If they are silver then replacing the HDD is not going to fix your problem.

EDIT: Nope, they're silver. :(
