574383 2007-07-30 23:40:00 Hi all,

I have an annoying problem for which I can't find a cure.

The DVD drive in My Computer often (though not always) renames itself on insertion of another CD or DVD. The drive letter does not change only the name. Somtimes the drive will sit for weeks with a label of a disk I have previously inserted even though several disks have been inserted since.

Is there a way I can stop the renaming process altogether?

I am running XP Pro SP 2

Thanks in advance for any help

Seems to have worked thus far, I bow to greater wisdom.

Thanks chief. :) :) :)

574388 2007-08-02 06:37:00 Seems I spoke too soon and I still have the problem .

I have now discovered that the disc label name does correctly change if I reboot . Autoplay may in fact be disabled, if I put in a CD or DVD it doesn't start unless I select it . If I right click on the drive and open properties and then select the autoplay tab, I have the option of setting to default which I have done .

This problem exists with both of my DVD RW drives which are of different makes .

Still open for ideas folks and thanks for suggestions so far .

574389 2007-08-02 07:33:00 Probably a shot in the dark but see if there's a firmaware upgrade for your drives. I suspect that this has nothing to do with the problem but it may well fix it.

You could try uninstalling, disconnecting the drives and then do a few reboots without the drives then reconnect them 1 at a time with a reboot in between.

Hope that helps...

Cheers

574390 2007-08-02 08:19:00 It's "something" in Windows. I get this in W2k. Sometimes it updates; sometimes it doesn't. It's nothing to do with firmware in drives. I would not advise playing with firmware without a good reason. Graham L (2)
574391 2007-08-02 08:35:00 Thanks guys,

I get the feeling as well that it is a Windows problem. The fact that two different DVD drives on the same machine both have the same problem would tend to lend weight to this theory would it not?

574392 2007-08-02 08:38:00 Have you tried using the "Eject" option in the right-clock dropdown menu? I'm not sure if that affects the label, because I don't worry about it. So it's not a problem for me.;) Graham L (2)
