574322 2007-07-30 11:16:00 I'm about to buy an external hard drive to do what I should have done ages ago and back up my business data (and personal pics etc at home).
My computers (business and home) are approx 2 years and 5 years old, both running Windows XP.
I was going to buy a USB compliant hard drive with a fast SATA II drive which I understood I could at least connect via the USB 2 port and back up my work. USB I understand as its so easy..My question is will a USB & SATA complaint external 250GB drive work for me or do I need a IDE type? Does a SAta drive need a Sata input or does this mean I can connect via USB but perhaps not using the SATA connection due to age of my computers. ie am I correct in understanding my USB connection will work fine but I might not be able to take advantage of the fast SAta Drive due to the age of my machines??
Any advice for this learning amateur appreciated !!

574323 2007-07-30 11:24:00 You could have firewire, SATA or USB.

But if you use SATA, it'd be better, if you had E-SATA (a mobo that has the connection on it), which would make it easier to connect.

I think there are IDE - SATA adapters, but I think most of them are for inside the case, not outside.

I think you are getting a bit confused. If you are going to connect an external hard drive to your computer via USB then the type of hard drive (sATA or ATA) will not matter as you will be using an adaptor. The adaptor which plugs into the HDD will need to be of the same type as the HDD. The other end will be USB which is plugged into your computer's USB port. If you buy an external hard drive already in an enclosure you won't need to be concerned about what type it is.

Note that your five year old computer will most likely have the older, slower USB 1.1 so data transfer will not be as quick as the newer computer.
