574467 2007-07-31 11:48:00 It's greyed out and there's no sound because windows thinks the audio device doesn't exist or because it doesn't think it's an audio device. Not because it's down on 0 volume.

Did you use window's own drivers or did you install them seperately?

What is your model of motherboard?

Did the sound work fine before SP2?

Is directX working fine? (run -> dxdiag)

574468 2007-08-01 05:15:00 I have a Microstar P4MAM-V motherboard with Via 8235 Chipset. AC 97 audio is integrated into this chipset and it is a Via@VT 1616 6-channel software audio codec. I have tried both the drivers from the m'board website and the windows. But there is no difference. Each time I unistall the sound card driver and reboot the device is detected and windows load the drivers and then claim that the hardware is ready to use. It has previously worked with SP2. The only difference this time is a new Radeon 9550 video card which I can't see having any effect on the sound card driver. To make things stranger, the sound works perfectly on my Linux partition. I did try running the directx diagnosis, but it came up saying no sound card found. madan284 (7145)
574469 2007-08-01 06:23:00 In your 1st & last post you made reference to the change in vidio card.
If you were to revert back to your previous one it would prove if there was any conection to the problem.

574470 2007-08-01 07:38:00 Yeah, that seems to be the only option. But I am worried whether I have to go for total reformat as well. Well, if nothing else works that's what I will do. madan284 (7145)
574471 2007-08-01 08:30:00 Drivercleaner might be a good program here, remove all the drivers you have ever installed for the soundcard, (which should stop it from automatically installing)

And then install www.viaarena.com

It might even be enough just to extract those drivers, go to device manager, choose "update driver" for your soundcard and tell it to use those.

574473 2007-08-01 09:50:00 Thanks guys, I have already tried the driver from Via. No joy. Also, with regards to Drivecleaner, is this a good program? Some say it does more harm than good. Any one being using it? madan284 (7145)

I've used Drivecleaner but only for removing ATI / Nvidia drivers after i've uninstalled the drivers.

Its fine. Just make sure you dont select the wrong option (don't select the WDM option for example). it'll delete/remove digital cam drivers and scanner drivers too (any imaging drivers). And you'll have to reinstall them.

This is where you got the drivers right ? (global.msi.com.tw)

You did install the 4-1 drivers too didnt you?

574475 2007-08-01 10:35:00 Thanks Speedy, I installed the 4 in 1 before reinstalling the sound card drivers, nothing works.
Your link is correct, that's where I downloaded the drivers from.

Where do I download Drivecleaner from?

574476 2007-08-01 10:51:00 Where do I download Drivercleaner from?

Do a search in Google or Yahoo.

I dont think the free version is on the main site now.

Search for Drivercleaner pro 1.5.
