Tried rebooting and doing it again, no luck.

Help please

576233 2007-08-03 11:26:00 I take it, you're not trying to format the hdd, Windows is on??

It is another partition or hdd right?

576234 2007-08-03 21:20:00 Are you attempting to format from within windows, or via the commandline (froom a boot cd/disk)? (I think thats what Speedy was meaning:)) Myth (110)
576235 2007-08-03 21:49:00 Within windows.

But no I am not a complete idiot. I installed XP on a newer bigger HDD and want to format the the old one. I booted off XP on the new HDD and went to format the old HDD but it won't work.

It doesn't matter that the old one has XP on it does it? Because I'm not booting of that HDD.

576236 2007-08-03 22:00:00 fishy If there is nothing on the HDD you want and you need to format it create or download a windows 98 boot disk. if it has fdisk and format dos programs on it you can you should be able to format it with that/and or delete the partitions and re-create them albiet fat32 but XP can convert those. 576237 2007-08-03 22:30:00 This may help.

When I go into disk management the HDD i'm running windows off now is labeled "Boot"
And the HDD want to format is labeled "System"

Is that why I can't format it?

576238 2007-08-03 23:38:00 Whats Boot? C,D,E ?

And whats System?? C,D,E etc?

It should tell you the size of both, and if the newer hdd is bigger than the old, this will give you a clue which hdd to format.

576239 2007-08-03 23:49:00 Boot is D which i'm running XP off now.

System is C.

I want to format C.

C is smaller than D.

I am clicking format C. It doesn't work.

576240 2007-08-03 23:57:00 Hmm you did jumper the old hdd to slave didnt you?

And the new one to master??

And did you change the bootdisk in the BIOS to D?? The new hdd?

It sounds like you havent done this, which is why C the hdd you want to format is saying System.
