575608 2007-08-02 11:09:00 Budget? Between NZ$2000-2500

Screen: Thin and Light; 13" - 14" screen

Brand: Have developed a fondness for Sony goods over the years, but also hear good things about dell, Toshiba, Asus and HP.

Tasks: General study work (law degree) but with entertainment abilities.

Mobility: Yes, like it will have to be able to be take to lecture theaters, libraries etc.

Games: Yes, battlefield series (BF2 mainly), RTS

Battery life: 3 to 4 hours of decent use

Buying online: Yes I am fine with that, but I expect to see good pictures though.

Operating system: Windows vista home premium

Screen Specifics

Standard or widescreen: Whatever is best for games.

Resolution: Preferable something lower perhaps 1024 by 786 on a 14.1 inch. On a widescreen 1440x900 or lower

Gloosy or non gloosy: Don't care either way

Build Quality and Design

Style/design: I value function over looks.

laptop life time: 4 years would be nice

Notebook Components

Hard drive: 120gb, but I will probably buy external drive for back ups

Optical drive: dvd rewriter dual layer

So any ideas on what I should get (I stole the template from another forum, but it should give you some idea what I want)

575609 2007-08-02 13:12:00 I bought a HP dv6000 Pavilion series about a month ago and it has all the specs you mentioned other than a slightly inadequate GFX card and only a 80GB HDD I think. Otherwise it has everything and I take it to Uni everyday.

It even looks very good and comes with a remote and only cost me about $1700 so if you go for one higher up in the range, you'll be sorted:thumbs:

575610 2007-08-02 13:43:00 I bought my ASUS Z92T laptop from DSE quite some time ago. It nearly matches your requirement, except that it is running XP Pro and has only a total capacity of 100GB HDD.

The beauty of the laptop is that it comes with nVidia 7600 256MB dedicated graphics card.

Any particular needs for wireless connection?

Cost: $2098 (back then anyway)

Cheers :)

575611 2007-08-03 08:21:00 Any of you guys know how to get dell coupons? JSF_enthusiast (8536)
575612 2007-08-03 09:06:00 General study work (law degree) but with entertainment abilities. It doesn't meet your gaming requirements, but MacBooks are very popular in law school and meet pretty much all your other requirements - make sure you click on the education store on Apple's website to find out what the student prices are. :) maccrazy (6741)
575613 2007-08-03 09:19:00 What specifically doesn't meet my gaming requires? JSF_enthusiast (8536)
575614 2007-08-03 09:27:00 MacBooks have integrated graphics which are fine for general use, but unusable for games. You would need a MacBook Pro for gaming, but that would be out of your budget range and wouldn't be as portable. maccrazy (6741)
575615 2007-08-03 09:28:00 The Wifi and security aspects are pretty good though. :)
You will probably be too busy studying law to have any time gaming.

575616 2007-08-03 10:12:00 Just don't get macs, too expensive and you get nothing but a white case for it. I mean the cheapest one for Uni students is $1999!!:eek: beeswax34 (63)
575617 2007-08-03 10:24:00 Considering the poster has $2000 - $2500 to spend I would say that $1999 falls within the budget and that includes the white or black case and the OS with iLife. :) winmacguy (3367)
