575628 2007-08-04 02:29:00 Just put it this way, I don't want to get a year into university and discover I need a graphics card, perhaps apple should not be so narrow minded and realize that people who use so called 'portables' may in fact need some graphics strength beyond integrated graphics.

Yeah and I can't study all the time, what am I supposed to do in university breaks/holidays? (other than getting totally wasted!)

Do you guys think regardless of mac or pc it is worthwhile getting 2gb of ram? plus what core 2 duo chip should I be aiming to get at least?

Why do you need a grunty graphics card to study law? I thought it was mostly lots of word docs and a few power point presentations?

Uhm, didn't he say he want to do occasional gaming?

Cheers :)

That is the answer I was looking for. :)
A law degree takes about 4 long years of dedication and usually leaves you with a rather large student debt.

575632 2007-08-04 04:30:00 So do a lot of other degree's. Mine's 4 years and I'll have $22k upwards but it'll be well worth it. Nothing wrong with getting a law degree:thumbs: beeswax34 (63)
575633 2007-08-04 04:43:00 Correct beeswax34 there is nothing wrong with getting a Law degree and my issue is not with the law degree, my issue was with the need to get a gaming capable laptop supposedly in order to go through 4 years of law degree. What does gaming have to do with studying law? If your that mentally tired from studying how is playing Wow or any game at 2 am going to prepare you for the next days Law lectures?
For the record any decent $1600+ PC laptop would be more than suitable for use regardless of platform or brand.
The poster did however mention that they may change their mind for a different course.

575634 2007-08-04 11:16:00 Yeah the most likely degrees i end up doing are law, arts (political science, history etc), commerce or perhaps software engineering (although unlikely) .

I just know that with a laptop it is near impossible or a huge inconvenience to change any component later (other than RAM) . Although I won't necessarily be able to future proof myself, I do want some piece of mind knowing my laptop is an all rounder and shouldn't have such a severe shock if say I suddenly needed a graphics card . The graphics cards than come with 12 . 1-14 . 1 inch dells aren't top of the line or anything, but a graphics card is better than integrated graphics . Plus, it will make the so called 'Aero experience' even better .

You guys reckon PC World needs to update its buyer guides . . . they were good a year ago but a lot has happened in a year .

You should be ok with a middle of the range laptop for around 3 years, there are a lot of people who would have a laptop for 6 years with no problems it just depends on what you use it for. If you believe Microsoft then the Aero "experience" will be worth it otherwise you could just consider it to be a bit more lipstick on XP...:2cents:

For a laptop suited to the areas of study your looking at in the $2000-$2500 price range either a MacBook or Vista laptop would be well suited and if your serious about your studies then getting one with a suitable graphics card shouldn't be a problem since I would imagine that you would be spending your Uni holidays looking for part time work to try and minimise your student debt since there is usually a bit around if your willing to give most things a go.:)
Make sure you start out with at least 2GB of RAM rather than upgrading it later $$$. With a MacBook you get the "Aero" experience without the performance hit.

575636 2007-08-12 01:20:00 Are there any laptops available that have a screen between 12.1 and 14.1 inches and have a graphics card stronger than the nividia 8400GS 128mb. JSF_enthusiast (8536)
