Thats why Windows won't let you.
Start again.
Make the new drive C:.

Don'tr have the old one connected at this point.

So I unplug the old drive, boot up the computer, make the new drive C: in disk management. Then plug the old HDD back in and when it boots up it will auto assign itself to D: and then I can format it? :)

576243 2007-08-04 09:25:00 I think PCtek means.

Disconnect the old hdd.

Plug the new hdd in, reformat the new one / install XP on it.

After XP has been installed on the new one, reconnect the old hdd, then format the old hdd.

And once the old hdd has been formatted, XP will give it a letter.

Altho it shouldnt matter if the old hdd is connected or not.

Just start all over again, put the XP cd in.

Delete all partitions on both hdd's, - If u want that is, (and recreate whatever partitions on both if u want them), then make sure you install XP on the NEW hdd, not the old one.

But I just installed XP on this new HDD yesterday . I only just got all the programs etc on it :waughh:

Is there a way to do it without having to do XP again on this new one?

576245 2007-08-04 11:33:00 No, because it sounds like you did it wrong the first time.

Or else you cant format the old hdd.

As you found out.

The only other thing u can do is connect the old hdd to another PC as slave and then try and format it.
