575584 2007-08-03 02:10:00 Probably a guy who makes his money from creating "Professional" looking web pages :D :D

I'm currently working as a Web Designer. (Qualified, 2 degree's + industry experience).

And i can't stress enough the importance of a professional looking website. I'm not trying to say "spend 1000's on a top notch website". Just don't go making something cheap and free and then put your name on it. Leaves a nasty taste in viewers mouths when they stumble across your site.

Our industry is far too full of rip-off merchants charging outrageous amounts for professional sites, when so often it's just as workable for amateurs to create their own sites with a bit of playing around with some free software.

"Cheap and free" doesn't mean it has to look cheap and free! It means inexpensive or, literally, free.

Just as long as it doesn't LOOK amateur-made.

575587 2007-08-03 02:35:00 FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, DON'T MAKE YOUR OWN WEBSITES.

If you are making them for a business that is.

Who said it was for a business website? Lots of people enjoy putting up a few pages for family and friends and a lot of them do a very good job of it indeed. Far better some some business websites I have come across, in fact.

As for Nvu, it doesn't seem to be very Opera-friendly. Their home page displays with text over text in Opera. :(

575588 2007-08-03 02:40:00 It's just as bad when a web designer with a few degrees charges accordingly for a site that looks crap... or even worse talks a client into a 'Flash' site- the guys should be hung drawn and quartered.

I've seen a few good amateur sites done with programs like Nvu...

I've also seen a few 'commercial' sites done like a dog's breakfast.

575589 2007-08-03 02:58:00 Totally agree with shortcircuit, I've seen some so called "professional " web sites that look rubbish , or are almost impossible to navigate around. ( just my 2 cent worth) :2cents: wainuitech (129)
575590 2007-08-03 03:31:00 Yep .. the word "professional" means nothing in web design, some of the most glitzy sites suck in the search engines.

I just bought MS Expression :) waiting for it to arrive....

... its not even in the shops yet, and some places had never heard of it

They have probably never heard of it because it comes from an unusual source called Microsoft as opposed to Adobe/Macromedia (Dreamweaver) ;)
