| 575884 | 2007-08-02 23:20:00 | I'm a newcomer to Linux and have installed Ubuntu 7.04. (works great). However, Ubuntu is the first to boot, unless I'm quick off the mark and select Win. Ive used the admiin password to get to boot/grub/menu.lst, but cannot save the changes to make Win the first boot option. (It's still my primary system). It comes up with "You do not have the permissions necessary to save the file" Any Suggestions? | DaveMac (2886) | ||

This is the most likely issue. Your /boot is mounted as read-only on a separate partition You have somehow restricted write permissions to the file, however this is extremely unlikely. Root can do anything. :D |

To edit the file, you will have to type into a console: sudo <editor of your choice (eg: gedit, nano)> /boot/grub/menu.list It will ask for your password. Put your user password here. It won't display anything onscreen when you put the password in. |
