575677 2007-08-02 20:13:00 IBM Thinkpad. Press the on button and most times if it has been turned off overnight or for a while it does not start up. If I press the on button again and turn it off, then again and turn it back on all is sweet. Its not a Windows issue, its a laptop itself issue i think.

I wondered if it was shutting down into hibernation or standby but I have turned off all standby and hibernation stuff that I can find so when it shuts down from XP is does do the full shutdown.

I have also just set the laptop back to Factory Install default hoping that might have been a problem, but with that done and all the WinXP updates back in place the startup is still the same:-(

Model R51.

575678 2007-08-02 21:41:00 Does it make any difference if it starts on power or battery? Driftwood (5551)
575679 2007-08-02 22:13:00 No, its the same either way.

If I just shutdown and maybe go have a coffee and come back and press the on button it often starts up first time. A few seconds after pressing the on button you see the IBM logo starting up.

But if left for a few hours or overnight then it just gives a black nothing screen and does nothing until I press the on button and switch it off then back on again.

It is a bit of a mystery:-(

575680 2007-08-02 22:23:00 Hmmmmm, I doubt it is the Operating System that is the issue. Perhaps, as you have suggested, is the laptop itself that is giving out the headache.

Since when has this started to occur? Have you checked out any BIOS settings that may have to do with power?

Cheers :)

575681 2007-08-03 01:46:00 Don't see anything that would fix it in bios either. Going to check out and see if there is a bios upgrade for it, maybe that will solve the problem.

It is a second hand laptop and it has been doing this since i got it. Since i don't use it often it is no biggie.

575682 2007-08-03 04:03:00 It could be that the "CMOS battery" is dead. It may be taking a while to sort out what default settings it's going to use. Once it has done that, it can start up quickly. Graham L (2)
575683 2007-08-03 04:06:00 I doubt it, it is not that old. Bantu (52)
575684 2007-08-03 04:07:00 So? Some lithium cells die young. Graham L (2)
575685 2007-08-03 04:24:00 If it were a Dell I would take that comment seriously, but in this case not. Bantu (52)
575686 2007-08-03 04:35:00 Your laptop's manufacturer doesn't make lithium cells; nor does Dell, nor does any other computer manufacturer.

A dead lithium cell is a common cause of odd behaviour at start time. It becomes more and more likely when the behaviour stops after the first start.
