577089 2007-08-06 07:09:00 recently i downloaded some game play trailer, they are AVI format.

i find that winamp player won't play it properly, every time i try to open a avi format file windows vista will tell me that " winamp player has stopped working.....blar blar blar...."

so i try to open the same avi format files with the windows media player that came with windows vista, same thing happens!!!

my friend has a laptop with windows xp installed and the windows media player ( windows media player 10, i think) played that smoothly!

what is wrong? do i have to download additional codex for both of the players for them to be able to play avi files? or just some sort of setting went wrong?

if i have to down load the codex where can i find them? i looked for them on google and it came up with so much stuff that i don't know which one to pick.

just any help will be appreciated, thank you so much!

www.free-codecs.com

and also you should try using VLC media player, will play just about everything:
www.videolan.org

fair enough the gui is nothing worth raving about but the usability is great.

that is a true statement. i started wondering why windows media player can't have as much codex as the VLC.

You have to understand the microsoft theology to get that - you see they will make something that looks nice, has a enough usability for the average pc user, and then . . . . . . wait a tik . . . . . then . . . . um . . . . thats about all . . . . . . . . . .
