576833 2007-08-05 11:58:00 In the event of a JPEG file refusing to open (or lots, but not all)... my understanding is that this could be the JPG headers having a problem/corrupted.

I have seen some documentation revolving around Hex editors and copying and pasting the image data into a healthy file with header data (landscape or portrait depending on the image).

Time consuming process to say the least... as long as you get the page orientation right.

Anyway, anybody come across a simple fix?
The photos are not mine - they are Wedding pics belonging to friend.
Saved originally to iPhoto and then moved between computers a couple of times. On a Mac.

576834 2007-08-05 22:56:00 There doesn't seem to be any "simple fix", unfortunately. :(

I had this problem after recovering around 80% of a person's deleted photos the other day but due to the effort required didn't pursue the matter further at the person's request. Like you say, it appears possible to recover corrupted JPEG headers but it is time consuming as detailed here (forums.dpreview.com).

What concerns me enormously is how easy it is to lose one's photos due to corrupt headers just by moving the files. It seems that quite a few people have had this problem after a reformat and reinstall as in this thread (www.computing.net), which is quite scary.

The importance of backing up one's photos to CD or DVD and verifying that the backup works on different machines cannot be emphasised enough.

Sorry I can't help with your problem.

576835 2007-08-06 01:42:00 just a thought... have you tried irfanview (http://www.irfanview.com/)at all - sometimes this proggie is able to open jpegs that have become corrupt.
probably a long shot, but you never can tell! :)

576836 2007-08-06 03:00:00 I take it you have tried using Photoshop to open them? winmacguy (3367)
576837 2007-08-08 03:19:00 Thanks guys... haven't tried photoshop. Don't have it. I have tried Fireworks MX though.

Problem is on a Mac so will looK to get them to try Ifranview on a PC.
I wonder if Microsoft will look to address this with their new JPEG format?

Surely an easy repair utility would find a nice little niche in this space.
Something with a preview mode so that you can get your orientation right.

Were all the computers involved Macs, ie no Windows PCs?

The issue is currently on a Mac, but I've seen it on a PC years ago (Win 98 or XP I think).

Don't know. That said, she just dropped her laptop the other day and the thing wont start up so that might be the last of our concerns.

Thank God for insurance. Won't save her data if the drive is poked though.
Sorry about the delay in replying... been a busy lad lately.
