576818 2007-08-05 09:54:00 I notice during the hours of 7pm till 10pm my online pings are incredibly high. On CSS, BF2 and Soldat it's around 250-350. This is all on Aussie servers, they seem to be fine on NZ servers.

I've contacted Xtra help & support but they place the blame on my end. I know for a fact that this is utter bulls*** as I know of several other Kiwi gamers with the same problem.

All of them are with Xtra, most on the Explorer plan.

Does anyone else here have the same problem? Any possible solutions?

576819 2007-08-07 05:32:00 Hey jason_f90
I noticed your post was buried back a few pages, so am resurecting it.
Yep, join the rest of us frustrated xtra slowband users
During these hours im lucky to get pings as low as you, lol, consider yourself lucky, my pings are usually more around 450 - 850 around these times.
Like you said the problem isn't from your end, it is there policy, that they don't admit but do partake in. Between these 'busy' hours, they throttle all of their broadband speeds - don't ask me why - they are just f***witts and i would advise changing to either slingshot or kiwi online if you can.

Do you know that for a fact? They could just be over-selling their bandwidth.

576821 2007-08-07 10:51:00 Well, they don't say that they will actually throttle it, but in small print, there is a policy that states that between these hours, if you use over a certain amount of bandwidth, your speed will be decreased. Funny how even if you don't go near the bandwidth limit, you're speed is still throttled.
I can sit here on the internet, downloading, and pretty much as soon as it turns about 5:00pm the download speed instantly decreases by over half. Then i keep waiting and exactly after 12:00am/pm (midnight) there is a sudden increase in the speed? Coincidence? maybe? but why does it happen every single night?
I have rung them and they just moan on about the fact that they have too many users and bla bla bla, but why the sudden increase/decrease at these certain times?
I mean holy sh**, the other day it was soooo slow, i couldn't even load goole :angry

576823 2007-08-07 10:58:00 I play BF1942 etc online (yeah old computer, I would newer games if my comp could handle it). The pings with xtra are a shocker, if xtra tries to tell you different they are simply lying to you.

I find I usually get pings around 50-60 on NZ servers, 100 or so on Australian servers and perhaps 150-200 or so for other countries. What makes matters worse is that the most popular servers in NZ are run by xtra/telecom and the servers are of low quality and they can't handle any more 16-20 players (depending on the game). Worse still these servers frequently crash and randomly boot people, and I frequently get booted of broadband completely. It means online games are virtually a no go area for me, as my games are old (therefore less servers), overseas servers give back poor pings, i frequently get kicked off the internet and the only servers in NZ with enough players are run by incompetent xtra.

576824 2007-08-07 11:05:00 yea, that is the sad story of online gaming in New Zealand with xtra. Though i have never had it quite as bad as you, i have had my fair share of disconnections.
Ever notice that it usually happens when you are winning and there are only about another 2 minutes to the game??? lol:horrified
I have heard some pretty good reports about Slingshot that may be worth checking out ae

576826 2007-08-07 14:44:00 A couple of alternatives worth looking at besides xtra:
iHug (www.ihug.co.nz)
Orcon (www.orcon.net.nz)
But they also have the fair-usage policies that would need careful reading.
Mind you, i have a friend who is using KiwiOnline (www.kol.co.nz) and they live in a more rural area than i do, and they get much faster speeds than me????
gotta love xtra :badpc:

576827 2007-08-08 00:18:00 *cough* Xnet (http://www.xnet.co.nz)*Cough*

Good speeds, good plans, decent prices, awsome customer support.
Oh, and you can get them to turn interleaving OFF, which also improves ping times...
