Anyhow, Turn off unrequired background applications and services, either via msconfig or use something that identifies them if your a bit iffy about turning them off, Spybot works well for this, It highlights the startup entries in different colours depending on how important they are, it also has detailed info and recommendations about most entires. In my experience you can turn off everything apart from your anti-virus. Secondly, Run Crap cleaner, ditch all the crap Windows likes to stash all over your OS. Then buy some new ram. |

| 576379 | 2007-08-04 23:16:00 | It literally takes 7-8 minutes to start up, and then another 3-4 minutes to start up firefox. No it's not a fresh install, but it has run like this since it was brought. More RAM yes, but it shouldn't be too bad with 256. But. Over time XP becomes more bloated. The best cure is to reinstall from scratch. Its not always practical in some cases though. Hence the declutter, with CCleaner, antimalware and all that. It doesn't help as much as you'd like though. Creating a new profile will help too, take a look at your NTuser.dat vs the default one. Bigger right? Problem is, you replace it and you've lost all your customisations. The best prevention is to set up the PC with all you want then make an image of C: (split the drive first). Don't install onto C:, nor keep your data there either. Then, later on its a simple matter to restore C: back to how it was. |

A few steps you should follow to get an increase in performance. 1 - make sure there is a bit of room on your hard drive. I would recommend keeping at least 15% free. 2 - Defrag the hard drive several times. About 2-4 times. 3 - Download and install zonealarm www.zonealarm.com and perform a byte level scan. (i havn't actaully used zonealarm for about 1 year now, i suppose you are still able to perform byte level scans) - make sure you do an update first so it has the latest virus/spyware/malware definitions 4 - Download and install CCleaner: http://www.ccleaner.com/ and run the cleaner and scan for issues untill none are found. 5 - open your task manager, if there are more than 30 processes running, you need to turn some off. 6 - Open msconfig and turn off all unnecassary services, and make sure there is nothing un-essential on Start up. 7- Uninstall any programs that you do not use. After doing all this, i can garuntee that your pc will run faster, like you said it isn't a supercomputer, but taking as long as it does to start up and run programs is stupid. and a full re-install is a 'nuke' method and not always necassary |
