576843 2007-08-05 10:11:00 Right, I'm feeling stupid because I've spent almost 2hrs trying to configure my Netgear DG843G router to work with uTorrent . I have been downloading a file for 13hrs now and uTorrent tells me it has another 12hrs to go . The download speed average is 4 . 6kB/sec and the upload average is 10kB/sec . The file I'm after is 329MB . The transfer tells me I have downloaded 213MB and uploaded 458MB .

I'm really confused . Why am I uploading? What am I uploading? Why is it taking so long? Are these speeds about right?

I have HONESTLY read every flipping tutorial I can find but I still can't get this to speed up or for the port forward to work .

Another thing - there is a yellow triangle at the base of uTorrent telling me there is no incoming connections . So - how come I've downloaded 200+ MB?

This triangle should be a green tick and it is this (so I believe), that is the port forward thing I can't sort out .

What I'd like is for some knowledgeable person to assist me via email . I'm going to have to reveal my ip addresses and I would rather do so via email than on this public forum .

Would there be anyone who is experienced in uTorrent, Netgear DG843G and port forwarding that can assist me please . I'll even call you if you like as I'm naffed off with this now - it's just taking far too long .

576844 2007-08-05 10:40:00 How many peers are you connected to
in you torrent where the yellow mark is click it and it should bring up some settings now click test if port is forwarded now what does that say
If there is not that many seeds on that torrent then you will get bad speeds

576845 2007-08-05 10:52:00 Click on the logger tab in utorrent and it will tell you whether the modem port has been mapped to your PC. (utorrent is assuming your modem is plug'n'play.

Also the reason why you are uploading is because that is the whole theory behind torrents - you are sharing what you have with other people.
There is a good entry on it on Wikipedia.

576846 2007-08-05 11:00:00 To answer some of your questions - Why am I uploading? What am I uploading? Why is it taking so long? Are these speeds about right?

Heres how torrents work- when you down load a torrent you will be getting parts from many different people. Say theres 100 people world wide with that torrent, you may get different parts from each person, when its fully downloaded the whole thing comes together as 1 finished file. The reason you are uploading is simply because the parts that you have downloaded are now copying back out to others getting the same torrent. 60 of those people may not have the parts you got from someone else. The speed also relates to where the files are comming from, and how may people are on line, or if they are illegal files, or from a legal source. A legal source usually has a fixed location, so it will come through faster. Example,of that is if you down load Open Office with utorrent, that will come through fast. Other companies /places are now also giving the choice of using torrents as down loads instead of the standard http.

You don't need to reveal your IP address to any one, thats got nothing to do with it.
In Utorrent, go to options/ connections ( I think), look through and some where there is the port number its using eg: 4067 You then need to go into the setting of the router, find the area that allows port changes / additions and enter the port number displayed in utorrent. Then the router lets that port open to both incomming and out going traffic. I don't have any knowledge regarding your router setting sorry.

This is exactly the same as opening a certain port for any personal VPN or if you have any game servers that use certain ports or if you need access to any certain ports that a private server at work may use etc.
eg: the router will automatically open port 80 and 110 for email.

Slight balls up there, 25 and 110 for email 80 for http:

576848 2007-08-05 11:28:00 I'm connected to 14 peers . Already done the yellow mark click thing; that's how I know PF isn't working . The message tells me 'Port 62693 does not appear to be open and then quotes my IP address . This address is the one assigned by my ISP, so it's outside the router . I have the router settings configured for 198 . 162 . 0 . 1 as this is my gateway . This is how the tutorials I've read (four in total), tell me to configure the router . Or have I misunderstood? I tried to configure the router with the IP address shown on the error message (the ISP address issued for me), but I got an error message saying it was out of range . I clicked logger tab and it is empty .

Wainuitech - thanks for the info: 1st paragraph was good, ta . 2nd paragraph, I have already done that . Hence being stuck . So where am I? Well, I am confused as to why, when I do a 'test if port is forwarding properly' check, I get an error message that tells me it has checked the port I have assigned against the IP address assigned by my ISP and NOT the one I have configured in the router settings . Secondly, I am now at 70% downloaded . And finally, noone has said if this is slow and taking too long . help . . . . . . . . . . . . . please

576849 2007-08-05 11:32:00 Assuming that you have not setup port forwarding properly...

I'm using the latest firmware for the 834G but should work with yours.

Log onto your router.
On the left look for the "Content Filtering" sub heading.

Look for Services, select that.
Select Add Custom Services
Name it something like 'utorrent_1'
Under Type change to TCP/UDP
For Start Port, make sure it is set to the same one that utorrent is set to.
Do the same for End Port.

Click Apply
You should now see a new Service type called utorrent_1 with port xxxxx used.

Now back at the "Content Filtering" section,
In that section look for "Firewall Rules"

In there, Click on Add in the Outbound Services section.
Under Service, select the one you created "Utorrent_1"
Under Action, change to Allow Always.
Under LAN users, Select Single IP Address.
Change it to your computers IP address.
Leave WAN Users alone.
Click Apply

Do exactly the same for Outbound Services.

That should be it.

Try Utorrent again.

576850 2007-08-05 11:39:00 I'm sorry - I had already done exactly that. This isn't rocket science but I am obviously still getting something wrong. What about my speeds? Are they correct? What about the time it is taking - is this right. I have never used a torrent before. yorkshirekid (9033)
576851 2007-08-05 11:48:00 I'm a numpty - I just changed the router settings. I had the ip set to the router address [gateway] and not the PC address I was using. One digit made all the difference. Thanks BOB, I re read your instructions and it's there in the last few lines. Now - one last thing. Is this taking too long and are the speeds slow or is this all about normal.

Hang on, I've just noticed the speeds have got a lot faster since I made that change. Time remaining is now 1hr.

Bugger - I should have asked for help sooner.

Cheers guys.
