576778 2007-08-05 06:54:00 We have been given my mother in laws computer, that was only approx 18 months old, and it has no sound. Not windows sounds, or sound if we put in a cd/dvd.

It is running XP, built by Dragon Computers? I think. AMD Sempron(tm)2600+ 1.60GHz 448 ram.

I don't know exactly what I was looking for, but in the sounds properties, I found that modem#1 line playback, and modem#1sound recording are in the audio settings.

In my computer I have audio, midi and mixer settings, but in hers, there is only audio, modem wave device, and it says 'half duplex audio device'. That is in the sound, video and game controllers in the device manager. In some of the audio settings it also says SwannSmart 11 Pro V 92 Internal Modem.

I don't know if this is making sense, but if anyone has any ideas I would be thankful. My mother in law said it used to have sound, and she plugged in a microphone and it wouldn't work, and since then she can't remember if she had sound or not.

I have tried other speakers, but the error message always tells me there is no sound device found, or it is being used by another program.

And no, before you say to check if things are muted, there is nothing to mute! Speaker settings are greyed out. TIA

576779 2007-08-05 06:58:00 Are your sound drivers installed?

Go into device manager -> Sound, Video and game controllers -> and see if theres anything there like 'Realtek AC'97'

If theres not, still in device manager see if theres anything called 'Other devices'

It will have a yellow question mark as the label. If there is and under that it says 'Audio xxxx' your drivers aren't installed.

If that is the case find your motherboard disc and it will have the drivers on it.
If you can't find that find out your mobo model number and google for the sound drivers.

576780 2007-08-05 07:01:00 Oops, sorry, this has not got any discs with it, so I don't know. I tried uninstalling the driver for the modem, then told the computer to find new hardware, and it only replaced the modem.

I do have a yellow question mark, on multimedia audio controller, and raid controller, under other devices, and even connecting it to the net, it kept telling me they didn't need drivers.

So if you mean, are the drivers installed for the half duplex audio device, I don't know.

576781 2007-08-05 07:04:00 Ok your drivers aren't installed. Your sound card will most likely be 'multimedia audio controller'

Do you know your motherboard model number? You can google that + sound drivers and i'm sure you will get a result.

576782 2007-08-05 07:14:00 I checked what is in sound, the half duplex audio device, and the driver for that is the modem .

As for motherboard, no, I don't know, where would I find it written in the computer, as I don't feel confident opening the box .

576783 2007-08-05 07:14:00 If you are not to sure about the Motherboard Model / type try this program www.gtopala.com its free and will tell you every thing about your PC. wainuitech (129)
576784 2007-08-05 07:19:00 That computer isn't now connected to the internet, so will try that tomorrow, when I find some phone extension cords. Last time I was trying I disconnected everything and bought it up to the dining room and connected it to broadband, but can't do that tonight. Thanks for the help, both of you. supergran (108)
576785 2007-08-05 07:20:00 Ok, just downloaded it to my computer, and will put it on my flash drive, and install it in hers in the morning. Thanks again. supergran (108)
576786 2007-08-05 07:28:00 The other way to find out your motherboard is of course to remove the side of the case, and someplace on the board will be the make /model name. wainuitech (129)
576787 2007-08-05 07:30:00 Done it already, I guess "motherboard", "model", then K8m 800-8237 is what you mean? supergran (108)
