| 576432 | 2007-08-04 11:10:00 | Our desktop computer is about 4 years old and every so often it will restart, and i have no idea why. I have scanned for viruses and spyware and found nothing. could some one tell me how i could fix this as it is really frustrating when i am typing out a Word document or checking my e-mails and the computer will just shut off and start up again. I have also noticed that it has been getting slower over the past year or two but may be caused by the HDD nearly being Full. Windows xp home edition sp2 2.8GHz 1 GB ram 80 GB HDD if you need any other info just ask. |

| 576435 | 2007-08-04 23:18:00 | It could also be over heating,this will cause shutdowns for what seems like no reason- take the side off the case ( with it turned off)and look at the CPU cooling fan and heat sink, if they are full of dust / dirt clean it out (carefully). | wainuitech (129) | ||

| 576437 | 2007-08-05 00:09:00 | Feersumendjinn-The heat sink thats sitting on top of the CPU has to allow air through to cool the CPU. The cooling fan thats on top of the heat sinks blows cool air through the fins, if this is full of dust/dirt then the CPU overheats. When a CPU over heats there is a built in saftey setting that automatically shuts down the CPU - hence the PC shuts down till its cool enough. Most heat sinks espically if they are a few years old, will contain an amount of dust, it takes a fair amount to block it but it happens all the time. Ask any person who over clocks a CPU and they will tell you cooling is very important. Just last week when working on a customers PC that was shutting down the heat sink & Fan were full of dust/dirt, and the PC was shutting down after 4-5 minutes. Looking in the BIOS under the Health setting, it was running between 52-70 degrees, by blowing out the crap, it now runs between 29-35 degrees, and no more shut downs. | wainuitech (129) | ||

| 576439 | 2007-08-05 02:57:00 | Sorry Feersumendjinn, wasn't lecturing, I must have read your post wrong, I took it as a question regarding heat espically with the questionmark :D | wainuitech (129) | ||
