1417614 2016-03-17 05:17:00 Is it possible to do repair install with windows 7. I want to repair Windows 7 files and retain user program files.
Can this be done and if, how?
Thanks

1417615 2016-03-17 06:34:00 Yep BUT you have to be able to boot into windows normally. You'll also need your product Key and A W7 DVD ( not a factory OEM install Disc)

Pays to back up all your data FIRST, as sometimes things don't always go as they should.

The following link shows how, but the W7 ISO links are dead so if you don't have a W7 DVD you'll need to get one.

Just found out that I can repair windows 7 and keep programs by doing a reinstall from Win7 installation disk but it must be done by accessing disk from desktop: NOT safe mode or by booting win7 disk.

1417619 2016-03-17 21:02:00 when win gets that screwed up, better to wipe & reload .
Or maybe consider it as a good time to do a Win10 upgrade.

Repair over the top isnt allways a 100% fix , try that only if you really cannot do a clean install , or you have the spare time to try & see if it fixes the issues .
There be corruption in the installed programs/data/ file system as well.

1417620 2016-03-18 00:17:00 @ balnco That Windows Repair Tool doesn't do anything you cant do manually, or with inbuilt programs in Windows.

There are two versions, the free which does basic things like chkdsk, sfc scans and a couple of other checks. the paid one does do a bit more but again not really worth the trouble. As 1101 points out its often better to wipe and reinstall.

Repair over the top isnt all ways a 100% fix , Totally agree there. This W7, my office PC has had a repair install done, there are some corrupted files that dont give any problems, that are still there even after a repair.

Sooner or later, Might even be this weekend,Since it needs a reinstall to fully fix,I might load in W10 from fresh -if i can be bothered ;)

1417621 2016-03-18 01:01:00 If everyone made a Backup image of the system they would not have a problem. Just make a fresh backup every time you install major software. Just make sure that Windows is running correctly before you do. mzee (3324)
