2016-04-09 10:53:00 | I have successfully upgraded to W10 but now my computer freezes on startup. Not sure why yet as it had been working fine after the upgrade. Possibly I haven't a compatibility issue maybe on a driver but that doesn't explain it when I get to the log in and it freezes after that Its been mentioned countless times in this forum ( as well as this thread), OFTEN upgrades go in and all sorts of weird problems can occur. Sometimes they happen right away other times it can take a day or weeks to happen. The ONLY real fix is wipe the drive clean and reinstall W10 from fresh. Look through some of the other posts from people who deal with this sort of thing daily and its all the same outcome and recommendations. As long as Windows 10 has activated you can simply wipe the drive and no need to enter a product key, only make sure you install the right version and it will automatically activate. A fresh install will remove any problems with a older install. "IF" its still freezing after a fresh install, then its a hardware problem generally. You then need to eliminate one component at a time. Right at this moment , from the last week, I have 4 customers laptops ALL doing the exact same thing as mentioned above ( screwed up upgrades), along with another two desktops to pick up on Monday.

2016-04-09 10:59:00 | I used the media creation tool to load W10 on. Will I be able to do from that after I wipe my HDD? | karbren (14078) | |
2016-04-09 11:23:00 | I used the media creation tool to load W10 on. Will I be able to do from that after I wipe my HDD? Yep, its the full install. When you boot from it, at the point it asks for the product key, select I don't have a product key then it will give you two options, either Home or Pro, make sure you select what ever version you have already, If you don't get the right one it will install but wont activate. Pays to download as a ISO and make a DVD or USB drive from that. Sometimes the direct approach to create directly to USB fails.

2016-04-10 09:00:00 | I refreshed the PC and re-installed it and it worked fine till it froze again. I just discovered that the RAM I put in it is 1600 MHz and not 1333 Mhz as the CPU states. What will that actually do to the running as it is not quite the spec for it? | karbren (14078) | |
2016-04-10 22:46:00 | I refreshed the PC and re-installed it and it worked fine till it froze again . I just discovered that the RAM I put in it is 1600 MHz and not 1333 Mhz as the CPU states . What will that actually do to the running as it is not quite the spec for it? Have you done a wipe of the hard drive & a clean new install of win10 , not a refresh or reload over the top . Also , going back to your 1st post , have you got the memtest to run yet . memtest86+ , running from a bootable CD . That needs to be the 1st step . If you have faulty ram , expect ongoing issues . 1600Mhz should be OK .

2016-04-11 10:13:00 | I have not done a memtest86 + as I couldn't get it to load off the memory stick. So far it has been stable but I am buying new RAM to put in it that is suitable for the CPU. It is an Intel Pentium G2030 which says to run 1333MHz. So I am putting that in it and see what happens. I will then wipe the hard drive should I continue to get problems. | karbren (14078) | |
2016-04-17 05:07:00 | I tried to to wipe the hard drive and do a clean install but all it would do is keep coming up with a refresh or reload. I formatted another hard drive and loaded my W8 pro disc on it and still the computer freezes. I tried everything I could but I couldn't achieve the same results I got from the other computer when I did a clean install in that one. I am still doing the updates on the W8 load and to see if I can do a clean install to W10. I know i am missing something with all that I am trying. I have the ISO image on my USB but I cannot load it on long enough without it freezing. Even with a clean hard drive I cannot load the ISO image on as it does not pick up the hard drive. I am not totally tech savvy but am I running out of options????? | karbren (14078) | |
2016-04-17 06:55:00 | I tried to to wipe the hard drive and do a clean install but all it would do is keep coming up with a refresh or reload That is saying you are NOT wiping the drive beforehand. The freezing will be caused by one of the following. 1. Faulty Install/Software 2. Bad Memory, - either faulty or wrong frequency. 3. Hard Drive or connection between Drive and Motherboard problem. 4. Faulty Motherboard. If the Hard Drive was actually wiped, you wouldn't be given an option to refresh. One thing is very Common in this thread-- Trying to run test /installs from a USB drive - some boards/USB drives simply wont work together. Some Motherboards cant boot from a USB drive full stop. You would be 100% better to use a CD/DVD. If you wanted to completely wipe a drive then you would be better off installing on another computer some actual partition software, make a bootable CD from that software, most have that option, then on the problem PC,boot from the CD and wipe out the lot. THEN install windows from fresh Via DVD. Keep in mind that "if" theres a hardware fault 2-4 Above all the fresh installs in the world wont help. Not being nasty here, but after 68 posts over 7 pages and there has been no progress -- Suggest the computer is looked at by a person/shop who can actually test and locate the problems, as there has been several times fixes suggested and its gotten nowhere or the tests not run. Sometimes a fix just HAS to have someone with the knowledge in front of the computer.

2016-04-17 07:11:00 | I am picking its possibly the motherboard as it was originally in my main PC. I bought a new one and managed to update to W10 without much hassle. I also put a new 8gb RAM into the other PC which seems to not made any difference. I do hear you on that one. My pc guy I go to as you may know him from here Kevin Harrison does not do repairs anymore as he sold that part of his business to his counterpart. | karbren (14078) | |
