1418276 2016-03-28 23:37:00 I called and talked to HP today.

Their first question to me was, "Did you create a recovery image"?

If not, you may not get to do the 'downgrade' back to a previous Windows installation.

1418277 2016-03-28 23:49:00 No - I didn't.... :( R.M. (561)
1418278 2016-03-29 04:28:00 Right - I accepted total failure, and rolled-back to Windows 8.1(successfully!), and then got the printer doing everything it should...

So - I'm not a total failure. :)

So my 'mana' is intact - sort of! Thanks for all your help. I WILL be back - I'm sure!

1418279 2016-03-29 05:19:00 Good, but you didn't say if it activated? Driftwood (5551)
1418280 2016-03-29 05:25:00 Oops - my bad. No, no, no - in spite of all our efforts. So after rolling-back, and getting the printer going - my friend decided she was very happy with Windows 8.1. Or perhaps she had got sick of me mumbling and swearing... :) R.M. (561)

Or perhaps she had got sick of me mumbling and swearing... :) Did you check to see if 8.1 was still activated after the roll back ? Sometimes they dont. (had that happen before) its a real PITA if it happens.

What sometimes happens, is if the original upgrade was by the "upgrade Now" message, then it may be W10 build #10240, then needs to download AGAIN build #10586, esp if the person has been putting it off for a while - doesn't always go well.

Doing it by the DVD/USB drive method which is currently 10586 it works fine, and activates, mostly. This is because build #15086 will accept W7-W8.1 keys, where as build #10240 wont.

I NEVER upgrade Via the auto download seen it fail so many times its not even funny.

1418282 2016-03-29 07:25:00 I take when you said you upgraded to Windows 10 did you use the Media Creation Tool? as this way you would have been given the option to enter a key or "I don't have a key" regardless using either upgrade or clean install

You should select I don't have a key reason being it's already activated (win 8.1) , by entering a key would have given you that error code

The straight upgrade from win 8.1 to win 10 using to update method would have not asked for the key

Most of that's correct ( if doing a clean install, W10 must have already been previously installed and activated), but if you are using the DVD/USB drive as an upgrade it will sometimes auto detect the inbuilt Product key and not actually offer to have it entered - did a Toshiba 8.1 to W10 last week and it did just that.

If it doesn't auto detect then you must select the right version, eg: if you select the option to ignore the key ( as pictured by Lawrence) you then have the option to install either Home or Pro. If you have 8.1 home you MUST select home, if you select Pro it will install and change to pro but wont activate because the embedded key is for home not Pro (and vise versa). DONT just click Next with what is selected.

MANY make this mistake & its a common cause of failures /non activation. You know, next, next ,next and not actually looking what "nexting' to ;)

1418284 2016-03-29 09:39:00 Windows 8.1 IS activated - hooray. After due consideration, I won't do any more for the moment(due consideration to the bottle of wine we have had with dinner tonight) and also due that I am going home tomorrow. We have decided that we will meet again in the next couple of months (her place or mine - not sure which at the moment) - ...... and tackle the whole upgrade again.

I will talk to you again ( :) ) before then to make sure I don't make another stuff-up. However - let us not forget that the printer is working beautifully!

Thanks again for you help in this venture. :)

1418285 2016-03-29 14:07:00 Kudos! Glad to hear you got it into submission again.

This is reminiscent of the trouble I had with pretty much the same problem, but I went further back to XP-Pro. Losing hardware viability isn't fun.

I wonder how many people regret going to W10 ?

No flames, ok?
