I use an android tablet as a bedside alarm clock, it's brilliant at it. And because it's not a phone there are no txt messages or alerts appearing in the middle of the night.

Means you can still have the phone turned on overnight without being disturbed by alerts and notifications, and then it just returns to normal at the time you set.
If your version of Android doesn't support that, I also used to use a free app called 'Llama'. It's a little tricky to configure but you can effectively do a similar thing. I used to have it automatically turn the volume to silent at midnight (or I would manually turn it to silent when I went to bed earlier). And it would automatically turn my volume back to normal at a user-set time. If you're that way inclined you can also have it set to do many other tasks automatically. Eg I had mine set to auto turn-off wifi when I left home, and to auto turn it on when I was on mains power at home, but not at work. It learns your location by the cell masts tower ID, so it doesn't suck the battery using gps like some other task apps do.
