578519	2007-08-09 05:19:00	Background Info: Windows Vista Ultimate - reinstalled 2 weeks ago, with latest drivers. Fully functioning without any problems up until 9:45am this morning. What have I done since 9:45am: Reinstalled printer drivers for my Canon LBP 3300 printer, this time as a network printer rather than direct USB connection. Attempting to connect to the network printer caused a BSOD twice. After a couple of reboots it allowed me to connect to the printer and install drivers. Symptoms: Windows begins to boot, goes past the black screen with the progress bar. Screen goes black, hard drive sounds like it's doing something. Then hard drive activity stops - screen is still black. About 3 minutes later, the LCD backlight shuts off. Nothing happens. System does not respond to any key presses. Symptoms repeatable with every type of boot mode except safe mode. Information: Event Viewer has no entries which suggest what this problem might be. I have been running Windows Vista successfully on this (exact) hardware for the past 6 months without any problems whatsoever. If you want to start an anti-Vista anti-Windows pro-Linux pro-Mac rant, this is not the thread to do it in. What have I tried: System restore to yesterday's backup. Disabled non-essential startup items in msconfig. Boot in "Kernel Debug Mode", "Allow Unsigned Drivers Mode". What I can't do: Remove printer drivers (can't find where to do this in safe mode). 578523	2007-08-09 06:14:00	IF it boots into safe mode OK then its normally a Driver Issue, Drivers not playing nice with hardware. Looks like its booting till you get to Did not load driver @hal.inf,%acpiapic.devicedesc%;ACPI x86-based PC HAL is the hardware layer. Try this, place the Vista DVD in the drive, boot from CD/DVD, go through as if going to install, at the INSTALL NOW window, down the bottom is "Fix My Computer" click that and see if it repairs the damaged system files.. Wainuitech & Driftwood: I'll give that a go, though I'd rather not at this point. I neglected to mention some details e.g.: -I have a lot of software installed into virtual layers using Altiris Software Virtualisation System - I had "layers" active when I installed the printer driver. What I suspect has happened is that the drivers have been partially "captured" by the virtual layer, and is therefore is wrecking havoc because they aren't in the right place.	somebody (208)
