2007-08-09 04:59:00 | Ok heres the situation I have a Medion computer which i bought about 2 years ago at $800 for just the pc, no monitor. And as of right now the casing is prtty rough looking, it has some small cracks and i have to touch 2 wires toghter to start it becase the power button broke The specs are Intel® Pentium® 4cpu 3.00GHz, 512 mb DDR-SDRAM, 150GB Hardrive and the computer works perfectly fine except 6 months oafter using it the graphics card was shot ( I guess one of the little metal solders broke off and it wasnt able to be repaired) all I rember was it was a 128 mb Nvidia and that its, but when I took it in to get fixed the computer guys said they didnt have a video card that would work with my pc that was up to par with my old card . So they gave me a 64 mb S3 Vision 968. SInce then i am not able to play any games at all because it says ithere is no 3d acclerator, well besides starcraft but in the middle of playing such a game the computer will freeze, so i checked the temp and its at 60'C with my cpu fam speed at 1325rpm, which i know is horrible. SO I already know I have to buy a Graphics card which is going to cost me about $100-$150, I have to fix the over heating problem and if i could i would liek to transfer everything into a newer and better looking case. But would it all be worth it in the end, because i can go to walmart buy a computer for about $400 with bascically the same specs if not better and with a lcd monitor and with Vista which idk what the diffrnce is between it and windows xp other than I would like to play halo wars when it comes out and idk if the newer games require Vista and if the do how much it would cost to transfer from my windows xp medion to vista. SO basically fix my old pc or buy a new one any one have any suggestions? Sorry to go on so long but i really nedd hlp rly quick! Thanx!

2007-08-09 05:09:00 | Further to my last post Welcome to F1. I take it your in the USA, so at the prices for puters over there it would be cheaper to buy new. | intel hunter (6666) | |
2007-08-09 06:49:00 | It depends on how much money you are looking at spending to upgrade. Roughly how much are you looking at spending? I have just built a very speedy pc for the neighbours, for $1400 NZD - dual core 3/0ghz Intel cpu, 1gb or ram, 512 mb gfx card, dvd writer, 17' lcd, etc/ etc. What is the model number of your motherboard, and i will let you know what sort of gfx cards your pc can run. For about $500 NZD you could do some nice upgrading to your pc, another 1gb of ram, new gfx card, upgrade the cpu etc. To fix the cooling problem, refer to a new thread i am just starting on "Efficient cooling of a computer' Cheers

No it isn't worth it. But I wouldn't go to Walmart either. Not if you want good quality components in it and decent gaming performance. Ask around forums in your country which shops they recommend for proper gaming computers. Newegg seems to have a fairly popular forum.... |

2007-08-10 04:51:00 | Ok, that motherboard isn't the most common board out there! took me a while to find out some info on it. Ok, for $500 the best thing to do is upgrade your existing system. I would recommend you buy another 1gb single stick of RAM and put in your first RAM slot. From what i was able to find out, some sites said that it had 2 ram slots, while others said it had 4, so if you have four just put your other ram in after that. Upgrade your gfx card. for keeping within your budget i would recommend either the 7600GT (www.newegg.com)or the 7950GT (www.newegg.com). both are really good cards, will work very well, and are well within your budget. From what i was able to find out about your motherboard, it does have pci-express x16 so you should be fine. (i wouldn't quote me on this though as the info on your board was scanty, have you got a manual that came with it?) And upgrade your cpu, you cannot use dual core but this is ok, you could upgrade to a single core 3.4/3.6 if you wanted to, but would need to make sure that this is compatible with your board. Was not even able to find any info about your board from the MSi website. so can't really help too much ae Run this program (www.cpuid.com) and post the details from the RAM, CPU, motherboard etc here and i will be able to help you more. Cheers

2007-08-10 05:00:00 | Check pricewatch.com You could make it go for peanuts in USA compared to what it would cost here in NZ. Also plenty of options there to get a new one at a realistic price compared to here. You could keep the hard drive out of your current one and add it to a new one for extra storage/backup etc. I would not consider Wal mart a computer shop, you have more and better options to choose from.
