578449 2007-08-09 01:13:00 Is there a set top box out there that will...

1. Record digital tv to hard drive
2. Networkable via ethernet/usb
3. Play dvds
4. Burn data to dvd/cd
5. Support multiple formats(avi.,mkv,etc.)

In other words, it'll do everything but cook me dinner:lol:
There are lots of machines that'll do 1 or 2 of the above, but not do all of them.
(Apart from a full blown media centre pc)

Is there such a mythical box?

578450 2007-08-09 01:21:00 With a few "K" you could build a box that does all the above and cook you dinner!!!

I'm not too sure though, I myself have never seen one like that. I would bet that probably no there isn't such a thing.. just yet of course... but don't quote me on that.

Cheers

578453 2007-08-09 01:37:00 The OP stated set top box, so I assume he's probably not referring to a media centre PC... however that's my interpretation. chiefnz (545)

Bluebottle: You should get one of those things my grandpa has . It tells the time, gets you up in the morning, makes you tea .

Eccles: Oh yes, what do you call that?

Bluebottle: My grandma!

You can pretty much walk into any computer store now and get a box that will do all that, or build your own and load your OS of choice.

578458 2007-08-09 06:26:00 I don't know of a set top box . You did say not a media PC . . . but mebbe it's the only option . Thing is, to do those tasks does NOT require great hardware . I'm guessing you get a pretty looking small form-factor box which would look good in your lounge, any 'ol celeron MB, TV card, 200gb hd, $90 DVD etc etc, a few hundred bucks .

Not offering to build or troubleshoot . :)
