578100 2007-08-08 06:32:00 Current server is an HP Proliant ML150 with a 6-bay hot swap SCSI setup. Two 36Gig 15K SCSI disks set up as mirror (software-based mirror/RAID 1). I want to add another two disks the same size, as the disk bay limits the options.

Does anybody know the best SCSI arrangement in SBS2003Svr? i.e.,

Will the two new drives form a second mirrored set?
Is mirroring limited to one pair?
Do the two new drives 'extend' the original dynamic disks, to form a large mirrored pair?
Do the two new drives have to stay unmirrored?

The server has a single SCSI board across the back of all the hard disks, so I don't think it will be possible to add more controllers. Also, I don't think software-based RAID5 is an option, as it is reported too slow.

This will depend on how you set up your RAID controller. I think that you will have to set up another array to be able to use these drives, but you can set it up so that the data will be 'sprayed' across all drives, or duplicated across the drives.

578102 2007-08-08 10:44:00 Hi, that sounds like a unit one of my clients has. Doesnt that have serial SCSI, which supports 0 & 1 & 0+1?. I would imagine the 1st channel in already 1 (mirror), so if you can make another channel of 1, you maybe able to strip the 2 sets, however suggest you take your time to learn the nuances of the controller. Why do you say software RAID, I'm pretty sure all the models have a in-built hardware controller!? SolMiester (139)

Thanks for the lead, Solmiester. I'm not sure if it has a 'serial' SCSI. There is an Adaptec AIC-7901 Ultra320 SCSI, which I suspect manages the whole disk bay. I'll go back and have another look for a hardware RAID controller, although I can't find any reference to it in the device manager, and the current mirror was set up using the disk management software in SBS Server 2003.
I'm faced with a chicken & egg situation here though, since I can't play too much with the controller since the server has both disks in use, and I don't want to buy new disks until I'm know they can be included properly. So far, I haven't been able to get any answers from HP or from the documentation on SBS. There is plenty on replacing disks, but not on adding. If possible, I think 0+1 is the way to go.

578104 2007-08-08 13:41:00 After further searching, I'm wondering whether my question is more about Windows Server, rather than SBS. Try this:

In Windows Server 2003 Disk Management, is it possible to set up two separate mirror sets? Say Disk 1 (mirrored to Disk 2) containing operating system and apps, and Disk 3 (mirrored to Disk 4) containing user data files.
