| 578289 | 2007-08-16 02:13:00 | Cheers for the input Jack, it's always interesting to compare specs and rationales for choosing this or that. I had a real good look at the Lian Li cases, but at the end of the day I could only come to the one conclusion, that they are utter poos. You can climb down now, was just kidding, teh heh. They're fantastic cases as a rule and probably still the leaders in design and detailing, but at the end of the day, I had to go for a steel sided case to keep my 'quiet' fetish satisfied, aluminium being noisier of the two material. I hope your ever so slightly mistaken in regard to the minimum power to drive an 8800GTS. I've actually gone back to the 650w PSU, simply because it's a better quality, more highly spec'd unit than the Strider 750w that was similarly priced and in my comfort zone price-wise ($250ish). Plus I've bought in to the "single rail" is the new black, like the Silverstone DA650, for no other reason than I read it in one or two sources that I respect (most multi rail PSUs only use a single DC source and split it anyway). What model Viewsonic to you get Jack and how do you find it? I suspect it's a little more upmarket than mine. Edit: On reread, I see you have the Zeus, which I'm pretty sure is single 12v+ rail too. So good choice. |

| 578291 | 2007-08-18 00:46:00 | Righty O, I have the beast at home, sans monitor which is a long story and entirely my fault (missus is picking it up today). Will post some pics when I've got it up and running satisfactorily, but in the meantime I'm having problems getting on the network and on to the net, as in I can't connect to my router even though I have a connection, have been through the setting a million times, swapped cables and ports, turned of XPs cruddy firewall, etc, etc. I'll do a bit more research on setting up XP Pro x64 (essentially Server 2003 with and XP interface), its a wee bit different to win2k Pro, but not that much that I shouldn't be able to nail the issue down. F'ing annoying  it is. If all else fails I'll get the hammer out. PS. One thing that may have fouled the network connection, is that I had to have a fiddle with the connection wizard before I looked at TCP/IP. Now that's against my rules, windows wizards normally being more useless than tits on a bull and more persistently troublesome and annoying than flies buzzing a turd. Could my fiddling have done something unspeakably irrevocable? |

| 578293 | 2007-08-18 08:48:00 | YAY! C u soon, I have some, errr, commencements to discharge :) Just you come down from that space you're occuping 2 feet above your chair, young Murray. And then take a deep breath. And then get Mrs Murray to pour you a nice cold beer (while keeping all parts price tickets concealed, natch) And then tell us some of the beast works, at least. And then we'll all put up a hearty cheer around the forum for you. (There've been so many watchers on this thread, you should be able to hear that in Welly) |

| 578296 | 2007-08-20 01:31:00 | The wee beasty & the wee'er beastette (i11.tinypic.com), sucking some stuff. Just the wee beasty (i9.tinypic.com) The wee beasty spills it's guts, phworrrr!!! (i16.tinypic.com) Sorry about the pic quality. It's pretty hard to get a decent image at night under a long life flouro light. I might take some more during the daytime, once I've relegated the wee'er beastette to it's rightful spot and tidied the place place up. I'm going to remove the fan from the CPU cooler and see how is goes. Last night it was running at 26-27C at near idle, with the MB at 26C, the latter being the one I expected to run hotter if anything. The cooler fan is sitting right on top of 3 of the RAM sticks, so I'd expect them to get kind of warm when under strain. |
