578277 2007-08-10 08:41:00 Yeah, I think the main problem with the old blowers was resonant noise transmitted through the chassis and disturbed air/air rush noise and probably air wave (the latter can also be a problem in the volume of a case).

A nice 120 at 700 rpm shouldn't cause any issues though, especially if its damped or decoupled.

578278 2007-08-13 10:40:00 Right, I've ordered the thing .

Got the A-Data RAM (4gig), added a Scythe Ninja RevB 1000P tower cooler and dropped the keyboard (will keep the rodent, even though I prefer one with a tail), otherwise everything else is the same .

I'll give the Ninja a whirl without the fan off and ramp up the load quietly . Also, if the Silverstone 80mm front case fan is a bit buzzy bee, I'll replace that with a Nexus 80mm jobby, while the 120s are supposed to be pretty quite, so hopefully I can leave them alone or perhaps run them at 9v if it turns out not to be .

The only minor disappointments, is that I couldn't source the TJ06 case sans the side window and I'll have to source a silver DVD bezel to retain the good looks . To be read as; I wanted to buy largely from the one shop, everything else was good to go and couldn't restrain my impatience .

Murray, you are doing away with the wind tunnel?, or does the Ninja fix inside the tunnel?

I think the Ninja will fit, but if not I'll remove it or modify the tunnel.

There's not a great deal of difference with it in or out, apparently. According to reports, CPU temp remains pretty well even when the tunnel is removed, but, and depending on the board used, removal can improve general board temperature.

It really is dependant on what your gfx card is, what your board configuration and chipset is. Apparently, the dual 16x SLI (590) boards take more power and therefore generate more heat, especially around the chips (of course) but also the caps, coils and other power doodas around the CPU (usually where the fins are located if the board has heatpipe cooling).

It's therefore important to use a CPU cooler that does not cast a air shadow over that part of the board containing the caps, coils and doodas, i.e. a cooler with fins that run parallel to the airflow, which is front to back in the case of the TJ06, not across it in anyway. Of course, a fan located to blow down on the CPU is ideal because air also spill over to the caps, coils, doodas and any chipset heatpipe cooling fins (if present) located nearby, but does not work with the fin orientation required for optimal cooling of the CPU the TJ06. So, the tunnel may have to go to get sufficient air flow to the chipset heatpipe fins, caps, coils and doodas and, indeed the back of the gfx card.

Another issue is the orientation of the motherboard. It's upside down in the TJ06, which means the chipset heatpipes do nor work as efficiently as they would right side up. I'm counting on the less power hungry specs of the 570 chipset requiring less additional cooling. Anyway, I've not read of the orientation causing a heat issue with the 590 boards let alone the cooler(?) 570s in this case, though there have been reports of it causing higher teps in Lian Li inverted board cases, but then they're absolute crap cases aren't they.

I can also use the 120mm CPU cooler fan, which I intend to be otherwise redundant, where the front 80mm resides with a little judicious cutting and airflow directing, to direct more air at the board and gfx card. Which will probably also require an additional exhaust mode.

Much fun to be had yet. I can't wait.

578281 2007-08-14 02:41:00 Murray, current heat pipes no longer have to worry about orientation....

make sure you post some pix and temps when you finish the build.

I'm not sure that's entirely true. I've read that Asus changed the internals of the pipes, but haven't seen anything from the horses mouth. Have you got any hard info?

As an aside, a heat pipe is more efficient without the addition of capillary action components, whether that be grooves, mesh or sintered material, however, without capillary action orientation becomes much more critical (i.e. vertical and right side up).

578283 2007-08-14 03:04:00 Murray, only what I have read from anandtech forums....this same question came up several months ago. This thread (forums.anandtech.com) and this article (www.benchtest.com) SolMiester (139)
578284 2007-08-14 11:37:00 I hope you're on the money re the heatpipes on those boards Solmeister .

A slight change to the spec . The 320gig Seagates were not going to arrive until after I'd burst a blood vessel in my temple . SOooOO, I ordered a couple of Seagate 250gig ES 7200 16MB cache 8 . 5ns seek drives . Smaller but, supposedly, tough little critters . Hopefully they're not noisy wee F***'ers with it .

578285 2007-08-14 21:22:00 Murray, you will be fine, and I must say you are being very patient waiting for your parts.

Some more upside down advice (www.dansdata.com)

578286 2007-08-15 18:55:00 I have just gone the same process as you. Spent a good month deciding what to get.
Case wise. I always get a Lian Li case. Full Aliminium. Good fans. No psu, so you can choose your own. I got the PC-V1200B. $433.44. A bit pricey but it runs the x6800 cpu with no sign of overheating. It also has wheels so it is easy to slide around.
I have a Silverstone Zeus ST75zs 750w psu. I would suggest a 750w as the minimum with the 8800 vid. card.
I also got the 8800gts card with 640 megs. It is satisfactory, but the drivers still have room for improvement. I run Nhancer as well and that improves things.
Ram. I bought Corsair. At least it's reliable, but a bit overpriced.
LCD monitor. VIEWSONIC of course. The others are just cheap copies.

As instructed I will not tell you what I think of AMD.
