| 578257 | 2007-08-09 02:58:00 | All your other bits look of good quality, so not much to comment on there. Upgradability, most people I know will use their PC for 2-4 years until it is slow in comparison to a brand new rig. Then when you upgrade it is often cheaper to buy a complete new computer rather than stuffing around mixing new and old hardware. So I dont really buy into the upgradability argument. OS, I would highly recommend Vista 64bit, have been using it for a few months now with no problems at all. But I would guess plenty |

Just to be perfectly clear, I was on the side of good vs evil, right vs wrong, righteousness vs immorality, veracity vs mendacity, the little guy vs the megalomaniac monopolists, sweetness, light and reason vs the utter P*****. Besides, my son, the recently disinherited, is running it and it looks like poos |

| 578260 | 2007-08-09 12:24:00 | With what hardware? 2 GB Ram 3000+ AMD 6600GT My rig is of way lower spec than anything I would build today, and runs Vista just fine. I find it a much more stable OS than XP. You just have to get over the different interface, I also use Mepis Linux on the same rig and also on my lappie, have to say my order of preference: Mepis Vista XP Most new home computers I sell have a TV card, 22" wide LCD and Vista Home Premium. Never had any complaints, especially when you show them what Media Centre can do. |

Im glad to hear you stand up for what you believe in, how dear your own son put a poo looking OS on his computer, I would send him a Mepis CD for Xmas . |

| 578262 | 2007-08-09 15:15:00 | I find it a much more stable OS than XP. i partially agree with you here. i am dual booting to xp pro and vista ultimate 64 bit. I prefer the vista for easy of use and pro for doing my 'tech' work. I have 3gb of ram, 2.2ghz dual core 4400+ cpu (overclocked to 5200+) 1.5 terabytes of seagate hdd space, and a 7600gt gfx card (soon to be upgraded) and vista runs like a dream, xp does aswell, but i find that vista runs a lot smoother than xp. But when it comes to doing anything technical, i am a lot more at home with xp pro. no doubt i will get used to vista though. lol. |

| 578263 | 2007-08-09 22:34:00 | I have heard good storys about the 64bit version of Vista, lots of americans use it for gaming with their 4Gb systems. The only issues I have heard of are driver stops with nvidia cards however that has been resolved. | SolMiester (139) | ||
| 578264 | 2007-08-09 23:30:00 | Robb, I guess you know I run Mepis, yeah, of course you do. Vista.... Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr :yuck: Give me Mepis with Beryl any day. Righty-oh, I've pretty much nailed everything down. The Ram klisted below is only to give value due to no other being available on the particular site who's PC builder I'm using (too fecking lazy to throw in a spreadsheet). I'll probably go for A-Data selected individual sticks (same spec), or perhaps a Kingston Value RAM kit. At the mo, I'm stuck on the monitor. It appears that all the ones I choose, in the under $500 bracket, 1680x1050 or better in the 5ns response range, don't have DVI-I connections but DVI-D. Now, I'm not likely to be watching HD movies on this (I plan to get a projector for that + sports), so that leaves games. Is it that big an issue? Excuse my ignorance, but does the DVI-I output on the gfx card hook up to the DVI-D output (same cable?)? I hear good things bang for buck wise re the Dells, is that true? I've stuck with the Silverstone Strider 750watt PSU. The fan in it is rated for ther same dBA as the Silverstone 650watt Decathlon, so I fugure it's going to output about the same noise levels and, as far as I can tell, the 750watt baby still uses a single 12v rail. | 578265 | 2007-08-10 00:32:00 | Hi Murray, nice case selection, its what i have.....now you wont have to worry about the cpu temp, the wind tunnel will provide cool air from outside of the case. The only thing with these cases is the small 80mm front middle chamber intake and NO exhaust, which isnt a problem normally unless you are running SLI cards or clocking the sh*t out of the single card, however, the system temps, ie, the board no covered by the wind tunnel will benefit from an extra exhaust fan as shown here (<a href="photobucket.com" target="_blank"><img src="http: border="0" alt="Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket"></a>), you will need to cut out a hole underneath the PSU. Once again, this is not really neccessary, however will keep your drives cooler and reduce the heat overheat on the PSU, the Strider does have a bottom mounted fan doesnt it!. Also, you can get window sealing tape to stick to the bottom of the wind tunnel, and because it will seal better and not allow air to escape up into the middle chamber you can then run your fans on the lower 7v or 5v rail reducing the speed and noise and still keep the cpu at very low temps. As for screens, my 20" HP is great, not quite 24 size, but not too bad. Being the smaller 20", the benefits are crispier text because the pitch is smaller. The LCD panel also has full height adjustment which the cheaper 22" do not. Nice build, oh, I realise you dont have the side window, however I spray painted the inside black too, as didnt like the grey interier. Lucky choice on the psu too, as the upside down mobo will require longer (550mm) cable to reach the mobo slot for the 4pin! Oh, just use the stock HSF for the cpu, you wont hear it! Oh, DVI-D means digital only, which DVI-I means the output does both analogue and digital! |

| 578266 | 2007-08-10 00:58:00 | Cheers Solmiester Your link to the image doesn't work. I'll be careful cutting any holes, my primary aim is to decouple noisy components, buffer/insulate and not create additional sources for noise to escape in my direction. What about the 8800GTS fans, anyone heard those, noisey? Yep, I looked up the DVI specs, not concerned by the absence of analogue at the monitor. And yes, I would prefer height adjustment too, but will put up with a lack thereof in preference for image quality. Just about there now. |
